1. Sushi Umi

Address: 41 Charles St W
Contact: (416) 923-8588 (call), (647) 229-3332 (mobile) | [email protected]
Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 12:00 PM-2:45 PM, 5:00-10:00 PM
Sushi Umi sets itself apart by focusing on an exclusive, seasonal fish selection sourced directly from Japan and Canada. They offer rare bites that are difficult to find anywhere else in town.
Everything is prepared right before your eyes, thanks to an interactive open kitchen layout.
While enjoying the meal, our team had a great chat with Head Chef Ivan (the founder with extensive training in traditional Hong Kong kitchens), who explained the origins of each seasonal delicacy.
Just keep in mind that the counter has limited capacity, so you must provide your credit card upfront to secure a reservation. Also, because the dining session lasts a full hour and a half, it isn’t recommended for children under five.
Unforgettable omakase experience at Umi downtown
Me and my friend had an unforgettable dining experience at Umi Downtown. Our chef that evening was Andrew, and we were being courteously and professionally served by Tracy and Lucas. Chef Andrew was a hidden gem indeed. Not that he was very knowledgeable about his omakase masterpieces, he was heartfully thoughtful and dedicated to every delicacy for the evening. We will definitely revisit and recommend this sumptuous experience to our friends who have refined palates. Thanks again for the remarkable Umi Team! Cheers Chef Andrew! 🍺🍶

Fresh and welcoming first omakase
My first omakase experience and I really enjoyed it. The environment was calm and welcoming, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. The shirako appetizer was surprisingly delicate and not fishy at all. The ingredients were very fresh. The ten-piece sushi set was well balanced. The fish bone soup at the end was clean and full of umami. A great place for a first-time omakase and a spot I’d happily return to.

2. Yasu Toronto

Website: https://yasu-sushibar.com/
Address: 81 Harbord St
Contact: (416) 944-8212 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday-Thursday 6:00-11:00 PM; Friday-Sunday 5:00-11:30 PM
As Toronto’s very first dedicated omakase sushi bar, opening back in 2014, Yasu is a restaurant steeped in prestige.
Chef Yasu (the owner and head chef) strictly adheres to the traditional edomae style, a classic preservation method meant to draw out the natural umami (a pleasant savoury taste) of the seafood.
The team serves freshly sliced fish over warm, loose rice with a delicate brush of nikiri soy. By sticking to a single, hyper-focused tasting menu, the kitchen maximizes ingredient freshness and flavour.
You get to sample incredibly rare items, ranging from premium Japanese bluefin tuna to Ezo Bafun uni from Hokkaido. On top of that, the downtown location makes it a standout choice among Asian restaurants in Toronto.
However, be prepared for a rigid 18% service charge added to your final bill, and note that they cannot accommodate vegetarian diets.
Special birthday omakase worth trying
Came here for my birthday yesterday and it was such a special meal! The attention to detail was amazing and all the staff were attentive, chef evn asked us if we wanted less or more rice and checked in with us multiple times on how we’re doing. I’ve never felt this full after an omakase, I’ve lost count of the number of courses. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the appetizer kaiseki the most!! Everything was delicious, it is definitely on the more pricey end but I would say it’s worth visiting at least once!

Unmatched food preparation and atmosphere
Visited for my second time after trying out another omakase restaurant and nothing beats the food preparation, menu variety and atmosphere at yasu. Was so happy i was able to try the dish served in the beautiful floral dish they’ve recently been serving. It’s gorgeous and tasty plus the aftertaste from that I believe are edible flowers(?) was such a lovely surprise. Hostess was also very friendly and accommodating. Can’t wait to dine here again.

3. Kaito Sushi Omakase

Website: https://kaitosushi.ca/
Address: 1211 Saint Clair Avenue West
Contact: [email protected]
Hours: Wednesday-Saturday 6:00 PM-11:00 PM
If you want an exceptional meal without the astronomical price tag, Kaito Sushi Omakase is a fantastic option.
This Saint Clair Avenue West spot strikes a beautiful harmony between traditional Edomae sushi and contemporary styles, focusing on shorter transport distances for their saltwater fish to maintain peak freshness.
The counter maxes out at just eight people per session, making it a highly focused, intimate experience.
From there, the culinary team guides you through traditional etiquette, recommending that you eat each course with your fingers within 15 seconds of serving.
It’s no wonder regulars often claim the chef-selected seasonal menu rivals those of high-end spots charging twice as much.
The only downside here is the dining window, as you have about one hour to finish your meal before the next time slot begins.
Memorable first omakase experience
Fantastic service, incredible food and a memorable night. Was my first omakase experience and I’m really glad it was here. The chef was a really nice guy and every dish was memorable and delicious. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a unique dining experience with high quality, fresh seafood. 10/10!

If you book their dinner service, you’re treated to an extensive menu featuring over 25 courses. It even includes a traditional Japanese tea ceremony alongside dessert.
For tea lovers, they host an irregular Sunday “Ochakase” session that pairs 12 sweet and savoury dishes with five premium Japanese teas. The massive variety of flavour profiles makes for a memorable experience!

Spectacular and unforgettable Okeya experience
What a spectacular experience at Okeya Kyujiro Omakase! Every course was beautifully presented, and the flavors were absolutely outstanding. The sushi was incredibly fresh, delicate, and expertly prepared. The staff were warm, attentive, and made the entire experience feel special from start to finish. You can truly see the passion and craftsmanship that goes into every detail. This was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in Toronto, and it was worth every single dollar. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an unforgettable omakase experience

Best omakase experience in Toronto
I have to say this is the best omakase I’ve had in Toronto. I’ve tried many omakase restaurants, but this one is on a completely different level. The food is excellent, the service is wonderful, and the atmosphere is chill and relaxing. The chefs are very professional and you can really feel the attention to detail. We ordered two dinner omakase sets and three bottles of drinks, and everything was perfect — honestly nothing to complain about. Our bill was around $1,000, but it was absolutely worth it. I loved the experience and will definitely come back often. Highly recommend!

5. JaBistro

Website: https://jabistro.com/
Address: 222 Richmond St W
Contact: Book a Table via Website
Hours: Monday-Sunday 11:30 AM-2:30 PM; Sunday-Thursday 5:00 PM-10:30 PM; Friday-Saturday 5:00 PM-11:00 PM
JaBistro stands out for its modern, vibrant take on the traditional tasting menu.
Their signature drawing card is their aburi (flame-seared pressed sushi) selection, highlighted by the famous JaBistroll roll. It combines salmon, snow crab, scallop, cucumber, and tobiko.
Their diverse tasting menus also offer a wide variety of textures, pulling in premium ingredients like wagyu beef, uni, and rich bluefin tuna cuts.
Another reason they stand out is their elevated hot dishes in the rotation, such as miso-grilled black cod and lobster miso soup. It’s a fantastic option for diners who want variety, but you should note that it doesn’t follow a strict, sushi-only format.
And because they rely on highly luxurious ingredients, the dinner tasting menu sits at a premium baseline price of $125 before à la carte add-ons.
Cozy Sushi Spot with Fresh Ingredients
Cozy Japanese sushi restaurant with beautiful and clean decor. Offering simple menu on both à la carte and omakase style. Opening bar watching chef’s skillfully cut and the ingredients are fresh. Personal preference that would be nice to have the sashimi to larger pieces in size. Overall, friendly service and charming chef. Prices are fair for downtown area.

Fresh Omakase with Accommodating Service
Exceptional food and service. Fish was fresh and so good. It was worth the price. We got a reservation for lunch but only had an hour. We did not feel rushed and the service was very accommodating. We got the omakase and my mouth waters just thinking about the dishes.
