Ontario Family Fishing (Mother’s Day Weekend)

When: May 10 to 11, 2025

Where: Waterbodies across Ontario

It feels like 2025 is flying by, and here we are, already heading toward the halfway mark of the year. Mother’s Day is coming up, and I’ve been thinking of ways to make it extra special for my mom.

Instead of the usual brunch or flowers, I’ve decided to mix things up and take her fishing! Ontario’s license-free fishing weekend is happening, and it’s the perfect chance for us to create some new memories while enjoying the great outdoors.

If you haven’t heard about it, here’s the scoop.

During Mother’s Day weekend, everyone in Ontario can fish without needing a license. It’s super beginner-friendly and takes all the hassle out of trying a new activity.

What’s even better is that you don’t need your own gear (thank goodness!). With the TackleShare program, you can borrow rods, reels, and tackle for free from locations like provincial parks and libraries.

My mom has never tried fishing, so this feels like the perfect opportunity to show her how it’s done. Though, to be honest, she’ll probably end up catching the first fish while I fumble with the bait!

As for where we’re headed, I’ve been eyeing the Toronto Islands. They’re close enough for a quick escape, but it always feels like you’re a world away from the city. Plus, it’s quiet and scenic, perfect for a laid-back Mother’s Day outing.

If you’re looking for suggestions, I think Humber River Marsh and Ashbridges Bay Park are good options as well. Bluffers Park could be a winner too, especially since it’s easy to access and you won’t need to walk far to find a good fishing spot.

Oh, and one more thing to look forward to: there will be a contest running throughout the weekend! If you share your fishing adventure online, you’ll be entered into a draw for a $500 prize pack and get a digital fishing package.

To participate, simply snap a photo of you and your family fishing. Share it on both Facebook and Instagram, include the hashtag #FamilyFishing in the caption, and make sure to tag @ofahmembership in your post.

I’m planning to snap plenty of photos (maybe even a few candid ones of Mom trying to reel in her first catch). If you’re heading out, make sure to do the same—you never know, you could win big!

And hey, while we’re talking fishing, don’t forget to follow the rules. It’s still important to only catch fully grown fish, avoid sanctuaries, and steer clear of overfishing.

Oh, and bring some ID issued by the provincial or federal government that shows your name and birthdate. It’s always handy to have it with you.

Well, there you have it. I hope you and your mom will have a blast catching some fish together because I know we will!
