The Best Gluten-Free Restaurants in Toronto: Delicious and Tummy-Ache-Free!

gluten-free-restaurants-in-toronto

Admittedly, I had the misconception that gluten-free dishes must taste bland. But this mindset changed when a friend of mine who has celiac disease brought me to a gluten-free spot and I ate a gluten-free pizza that was so good!

Seriously, if I didn’t know it was gluten-free, I would’ve mistaken that pizza for the real thing. It was just as cheesy, tangy, and savory!

If you’re looking to change someone’s mind about gluten-free food or if you’re on a gluten-free diet yourself, here are the city’s best gluten-free restaurants!

Almond Butterfly Bistro

From: almondbutterflycafe

Address: 792 Dundas St W

Operating Hours

  • Monday to Friday—10 am to 9 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday—9 am to 9 pm

Contact Number: +14168622030

Website

Almond Butterfly Bistro is actually the restaurant that my friend brought me to enjoy gluten-free dishes. We tried the pepperoni pizza, and it was so good. It had the right amount of saltiness for me, and I liked how we could add more toppings if we wanted.

Aside from pizza, I also really like their steak and eggs. The prime striploin is cooked to medium perfection, and the compound butter makes it even richer and more savory. This dish is also served with roasted potatoes that I dip into the runny yolks of the eggs.

Pro Tip

Give a fellow gluten-sensitive foodie a gift card from this restaurant.

El Pocho Antojitos Bar

– From: elpochobar

Address: 2 Follis Ave

Operating Hours

  • Monday to Friday— 12 pm to 11 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday—11 am to 11 pm

Contact Number: +14165518131

Website

My friend and I love Mexican cuisine so much, so it’s nice to know that there’s a restaurant in the city that offers a menu full of gluten-free Mexican dishes. Now, El Pocho Antojitos Bar is one of our go-to hangout spots.

You can’t go wrong with the tortillas and salsa here. The tortillas are wonderfully crispy, and the guacamole is tangy and refreshing. As for the salsa, you have two options: picante and verde. Both are spicy, but I prefer the verde one because it has a kick of sourness that I like as well.

Pro Tip

If you want to book their catering services for a special event, you can send an inquiry to [email protected]

Impact Kitchen

– From: impactkitchen

Address: 573 King St E

Operating Hours

  • Monday to Thursday—8 am to 10 pm
  • Friday and Saturday—8 am to 9 pm
  • Sunday—9 am to 9 pm

Contact Number: +14163061986

Website

I first heard about Impact Kitchen as a restaurant catered to people looking for healthy meals. So, this restaurant serves paleo and vegan options, and it’s also 100% gluten-free.

I love coming here for brunch, and my go-to order is the breakfast burrito. This burrito is jam-packed with spinach, roasted sweet potatoes, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, and more, so I feel full and satisfied afterward. I also love the mayonnaise-based sauce it’s served with because it adds a lovely kick of spice at the end of every bite.

Pro Tips

This restaurant offers catering services.

If you’re a big fan of the coffee or tea at this place, you can join their subscription program. Doing so will let you get unlimited drip coffee, americano, espresso, and loose-leaf tea.

Karine’s Fresh

Operating Hours

  • Monday—9 am to 3 pm
  • Tuesday to Friday—9 am to 5 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday—10 am to 3 pm

Contact Number: +14165910863

Website

Another great spot for a gluten-free breakfast or brunch is Karine’s Fresh. The best part is that this is a relatively cheap spot, so it’s perfect for people on a budget as well!

I usually order the Breakfast All Day Everyday, which is their rendition of a classic English-style breakfast. It has two fried eggs, bacon (or sausage), toast, and a side dish. I love that it also comes with fresh fruits, so I can end my meal with a refreshing treat.

Pro Tip

They can also cater to events!

Riz

– From: rizglutenfree

Operating Hours

  • Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday—12 pm to 9 pm
  • Friday and Saturday—12 pm to 10 pm

Contact Number: +14163226789

Website

Looking for a restaurant that serves gluten-free Asian dishes? Riz has you covered!

When the weather is cold and gloomy outside, I order the soup dumplings. It’s so satisfying to bite into the wrapper and take a huge sip of the hearty, gingery soup. The meat filling is also delicious—very peppery and sharp.

If I’m craving something more filling, I would get the Peking duck. The meat is tender and juicy, and I love how the salty-savory flavors go deep into the flesh. I usually get the option with pickled veggies to make my meal much more nutritious.

Pro Tips

This place offers catering services for parties.

They also sell frozen goods (e.g., dumplings and chicken curries) and other specialty items.

Insomnia Restaurant and Lounge

From: insomniatoronto

Address: 563 Bloor St W

Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday—10 am to 2 am

Contact Number: +14165883907

Website

Technically, Insomnia Restaurant and Lounge isn’t a 100% gluten-free restaurant, but it does have gluten-free options, so it’s worth checking out all the same. Plus, this place is open until the wee hours of the morning, making it a great late-night spot as well.

My favorite from the dinner menu so far is the mussels in cream and pesto. This dish lets me devour 1 lb of PEI mussels that are cooked in white wine, pesto, and cream. It’s a savory and garlicky delight, with hints of sweetness as an aftertaste.

Pro Tips

You can host an event at this restaurant.

There’s always live DJ music here at night. So, feel free to dance along during your visit.

If a vegan brunch spot is what you’re after, then you’ll undoubtedly like Planta. This is actually a well-known restaurant across North America. Fortunately, there are two locations within Toronto; my go-to is the one in Yorkville.

I usually get any of the salads and bowls. My favorite has to be the poke bowl, which has crispy mushrooms, avocado, mushroom bacon, and so many more. It’s such a refreshing dish, and it also has notes of sweet and tart flavors.

Pro Tips

Book an event at any of Planta’s two locations.

If you already have a venue, you can book their catering services instead.

Hugs and Sarcasm is the best place to go when you’re craving British and Irish cuisine.

The iconic fish and chips is a must-try. The battered fish is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the fries are perfectly salty. If you want more of a tangy kick, you can dip your fish or your fries into the tartar sauce.

If you want to experience an authentic English breakfast, order the Proper Fry Up. It has all the classic items, including eggs, strip bacon, sausage, baked beans, and black and/or white pudding. It’s very hearty!

Website

If you love desserts, I recommend you check out Tapi Go! This place specializes in all things tapioca, so you can indulge in a decadent boba milk tea or crepe.

I personally love the crepes here. My go-to order is the New Love, which looks so pretty with its vibrant pink color. Inside, there are fresh strawberries, dulce de leche, and pecans, so every bite is a symphony of sweet, tangy, and nutty. I can’t get enough of it!

Sprouty

From: sprouty_cafe

Address: 1062 Gerrard St E

Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday—8 am to 5 pm

Contact Number: +14166720200

Website

I have another recommendation for people who are gluten-sensitive but still love sweets: Sprouty! This shop sells pastries that are made with all-natural ingredients—no artificial sweeteners or colors. Plus, everything is gluten- and dairy-free!

I always treat myself to the Lindzer Cookies. My favorite flavor is the chocolate hazelnut because it tastes like Nutella and I love it.

The lemon flavor is great as well. Its tanginess is pretty strong, but the sweetness counteracts it, so your face won’t get all puckered up!

Pro Tip: This place has afternoon tea. Check this page for more information.

Score on King

From: scoreonking

Address: 107 King St E

Operating Hours

  • Sunday to Thursday—11 am to 1 am
  • Friday and Saturday—11 am to 2 am

Contact Number: +14165194654

Website

Score on King is such a unique sports bar because the items here are snacks stacked on top of a Caesar cocktail! Where else can I find dishes like these?

The Checkmate Caesar is my recommendation—even if my head tells me no. This dish has burgers, fried chicken, and brownies, making it the ultimate treat. After eating this one, I always feel like I’m ready to crash out and head into a food-induced coma.

Pro Tip

This spot only accepts a few reservations every day. So if you’re planning to come with a group, reserve your spot as early as possible.

Terroni

Address: 57 Adelaide St E

– From: terroni.to

Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday—11:30 am to 10 pm

Contact Number: +14162033093

Website

Italian cuisine is a great one, but it’s hard to find a restaurant that serves gluten-free versions of Italian dishes. Fortunately, we’ve discovered Terroni, a restaurant that allows for gluten-free substitutions.

I recommend getting any of the pasta dishes. My favorite is Senza Arrabbiata because the tomato sauce has a nice kick of spice. The Senza Bolognese is also a great one. The ragu is perfectly savory and meaty, and the parmigiano adds salty and nutty flavors.

Pro Tip

Book a special event at this restaurant. The package already includes a set menu or a stand-up cocktail menu.

Piano Piano Restaurant

From: pianopianotherestaurant

Address: 55 Colborne St

Operating Hours

  • Sunday to Wednesday—12 pm to 10 pm
  • Thursday to Saturday—12 pm to 11 pm

Contact Number: +14162160295

Website

Another great spot to check out if you love Italian cuisine is Piano Piano Restaurant. Though this is not a dedicated gluten-free restaurant, the dishes are customizable, so you can request for gluten-free substitutions.

I love the mushroom cavatelli here. It’s cooked in porcini cream with truffle-scented oyster mushrooms. This dish has strong earthy flavors, but it also tastes salty and nutty, thanks to the grated parmesan.

Don’t miss out on their pizzas as well. I recommend The People’s Champ, which is tangy and salty because of all the tomato and ham pieces.

Pro Tip

You can book any of the venues within the restaurant for a special event.

Stylish and elegant, The Parlour is a perfect spot for romantic dates or get-together dinners with loved ones. As for the menu, you can expect an array of comfort dishes, such as pizzas and tacos, and you can customize them to become gluten-free.

My favorite thing to order here is the stacked short ribs. I love how tender the meat is and how salty, sweet, and sour it is, thanks to the hoisin sauce and tamarinds. You can also have it spicy by adding dollops of sriracha.

Pro Tip

You can buy an e-gift card from this restaurant and give it to a fellow gluten-sensitive friend.

Bar Bacan

– From: bacantoronto

Bar Bacan specializes in authentic Argentine and Venezuelan cuisines—two cuisines that deserve more love. It’s also operated by a close-knit family, so the vibe here is very laid-back and warm.

I usually get the costillitas, which has rich, savory short ribs paired with fries and a spicy-tangy chimichurri.

To wash everything down, I order a cocktail. My favorite for now is the Rumba Papelon, which is a Venezuelan lemonade with sugarcane and rum. It’s a strong drink that’s also kind of refreshing.

Pro Tip

If you’re planning a party, you can book this restaurant’s catering services.

Anglr

From: eatzoftoronto

Address: 1054 1/2, Gerrard St E

Operating Hours

  • Tuesday to Thursday—4 pm to 9 pm
  • Friday—4 pm to 10 pm
  • Saturday—2 pm to 10 pm
  • Sunday—2 pm to 9 pm

Website

Anglr is a pescatarian’s dream come true. This restaurant serves all kinds of fish-based dishes—from stews to deep-fried ones. Plus, there’s an extensive array of beers, wines, and other alcoholic drinks, making this spot the best place to hang out with friends.

There are several dishes that can be modified to become gluten-free, and my favorite among them is the tacos. The corn tortilla is homemade, and it’s topped with either halibut, calamari, or shrimp (I tend to choose the shrimp). It’s such a simple meal but very hearty all the same.

Pro Tip

If you like the hot sauce served here, you can purchase your very own bottle from the on-site general store.
