We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Have you been dealing with chronic numbness, reduced hand coordination, posture issues, bowel/bladder control problems, and non-stop neck or back pain? It might be time to get your spine properly checked.

You can’t just rely on a general doctor, though. The problems mentioned above require a qualified spine specialist, preferably one who prioritises minimally invasive methods.

Lucky for you, a back-breaking search is no longer needed. We already did that. We found the best spine specialists in Toronto.

And if you want quick pain relief from back ache, check out the top massage therapy services in the area.

How much does spinal fusion cost in Toronto?

In Toronto, the cost of spinal fusion is typically between $65,000 and $75,000, with wait times of 12–24 months (public) or 4–8 weeks (private).
Costs are often influenced by the centre’s location, the surgeon’s expertise, the technology employed, the length of stay, and the patient’s insurance coverage.

How We Chose

Experience: We chose practitioners with at least five years of experience in a certain speciality, such as orthopaedics, neurosurgery, physiatry, or chiropractic care. To confirm, medical directories and regulatory bodies were consulted.

Clinic longevity was also measured, primarily by reviewing business registries and company histories.
Credentials: The review is only for FRCSC-approved, Board-certified specialists who hold a medical degree and have completed an accredited residency program and their fellowship training. Awards and academic contributions were also factored in.

Our team validated the information by requesting documents, reading through journals, and examining the databases of regulatory bodies.
Patient Interaction: Drawing on personal experience, feedback, interviews, and forums, we assessed a specialist’s listening and rapport-building skills, as well as their ability to explain things in plain English.

Information clarity for symptoms, conditions, recovery timelines, risks, and treatment options was also considered.
Treatment Philosophy: Assessment of treatment philosophy was based on the same sources. Unsurprisingly, specialists who utilise minimally invasive methods and modern tech were favoured.
Pricing: Cost-effectiveness was identified by calculating the total cost of care relative to patient outcomes.

Operating Hours:

  • Sat – 9 am to 3 pm

Website

Advanced Spine Centre has massage therapists, naturopaths, physiotherapists, osteopaths, acupuncturists, and chiropractors (for more chiropractors in the area, check out this list). That means you get multidisciplinary, coordinated care inside one centre.

If the choices seem a bit much, booking a free consult is the way to go. Your situation will be assessed to determine the best treatment course.

Many find the front desk quite helpful, too. Those we chatted with, in particular, mentioned positives such as efficiency and friendliness.

Payment is even simplified, as they offer direct billing to major insurance providers.

As for the results, most patients ended up feeling better, often after one or two sessions. The clinic’s record in patching neck and lower back pain is especially golden.

Some, however, believe the consults are way too short, claiming they paid for 30 minutes and were only examined for 20.

Not every service is rated highly, either. The massage department, for one, has drawn mixed reviews.

Pros

  • Multidisciplinary clinic
  • Open for 5-plus years
  • Efficient front desk
  • Bills directly to insurance providers
  • Offers free consults

Cons

  • Consults may feel short
  • Mixed reviews on the massage side

Friendly, Efficient Service

Outstanding experience from beginning to end. The reception team set the tone with friendly, efficient service and made everything seamless. Wilma, the massage therapist, was exceptional. She listened carefully, focused on what I needed, and delivered real relief. Dr. Ali and Dr. Lee were equally impressive. Both took their time, explained things clearly, and made me feel genuinely cared for. I left feeling like a new person with a brand new body and I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing them regularly. You can tell the whole team takes pride in what they do. Highly recommend to anyone looking for thoughtful, professional care.

The team is highly professional

I’ve been receiving treatment for lower back pain at Advanced Spine Centre, and my experience has been excellent from the very beginning.

The team is highly professional, knowledgeable, and truly cares about their patients’ well-being. They took the time to properly assess my condition, clearly explain the treatment plan, and tailor the sessions specifically to my needs.

Since starting my treatment, I’ve noticed significant improvement in my lower back pain, mobility, and overall comfort in daily activities. The clinic is well-organized, welcoming, and the staff always makes you feel comfortable and supported.

I can confidently say that the positive reviews accurately reflect the quality of care they provide. I highly recommend Advanced Spine Centre to anyone dealing with back pain or spine-related issues and looking for effective, professional, and compassionate treatment

Afiya Spine & Pain Institute

afiya-spine-pain-institute

Address: 15 Wellesley St W Unit 301

Contact Details: +1 416-413-7999

Operating Hours: Mon to Sat – 8 am to 4 pm

Website

Afiya Spine & Pain Institute’s specialists can be accessed right away instead of waiting for months. In most cases, patients were provided with same-day services backed by X-ray and ultrasound imaging.

We should note that subsequent visits aren’t as quick as initial ones. A clinic facing unexpected delays is common, but some folks think the downtime shouldn’t stretch close to an hour.

Staying put seems to pay off, fortunately. Afiya’s treatments, especially the injections for inflammation and pain, mostly lead to positive outcomes (the same can be said for the case history of these pain management clinics!).

The ablation procedures also earn favourable reviews. In fact, several reported improved mobility; one even won silver in a tennis tourney after a series of visits.

Results aside, the convenient location is a plus. Street parking is nearby, and the area is well-connected by bus routes.

Comms need tightening up, though. Issues with late and dismissive responses have been noted before.

Pros

  • Short waiting times for initial visits
  • Convenient location
  • Solid record in dealing with pain and inflammation
  • Also has counselling services
  • Provides specialised sports medicine

Cons

  • Queues for subsequent visits are longer
  • Responses aren’t always fast

I have nothing but positive things to say

My experience with the Afiya Spine and pain institute has been nothing but positive. I have nothing but positive things to say about them. Everyone starting with the front desk, who saw I was in horrible pain and my appoinment wasn’t for another month the the intake of the physicians assistants and then not the least of the all the physicians. Not since my family doctor retired have I experienced the respect and dignity that I have had at this place. They respected my desire not to be on any kind of opiates as I’ve seen them destroy good friends lives and their struggle to beat the horrible addiction that comes with them. Also I’ve been waiting on an MRI for months now and was hoping I could hold out on the pain till I can get a better picture of what’s going on. I now have a date at least yet it’s 6 weeks away. I have not had this kind of experience with such warm friendly and welcoming staff since my family doctor retired and closed his office. This was the type of attention to detail and genuine respect & concern I was beginning to think no longer existed in Canada.

Friendly and Welcoming

Hands down the best clinic in the city! We are patients of Dr. Surgent and she is truly exceptional—caring, supportive, and completely judgment-free. I always feel my family is safe and well taken care of under her care. The nurses and reception staff like Sabrina are also incredibly friendly and welcoming, which makes every visit feel comfortable. On top of that, the clinic is spotless and very well maintained—a huge plus for me since I’m extremely particular about cleanliness. I would 100% recommend this clinic to anyone—you’ll be in the best hands here!

The Orthopaedic Therapy Clinic

  • Tue – 8 am to 6:30 pm
  • Wed to Thu – 8 am to 6 pm
  • Fri – 8 am to 4 pm

Website

No other centre here matches The Orthopaedic Therapy Clinic’s longevity. Since 1987, the place has been sorting out musculoskeletal pain and helping patients regain mobility through one-on-one treatments and active rehabilitation.

If we’re talking outcomes, they’re particularly effective in treating scoliosis, spinal stenosis, sciatica, neck pain, and back pain. The majority attribute the success to highly accurate diagnosis and long-term plans adjusted to a patient’s lifestyle.

It makes sense once you see who comprises their workforce. Patients get support from award-winning specialists like Maureen Dwight.

One potential con is their emphasis on physio-led plans. Clients seeking pathways beyond movement or manual therapy may perceive that as limiting.

You can’t schedule consults on Saturdays either. Most spine specialists in Toronto have that perk.

Not all provide virtual consults and online rehabilitation programs, to be fair. This one does, and that’s on top of being 4 minutes from Downtown Toronto.

Pros

  • Open since 1987
  • Has award-winning specialists on deck
  • Designs long-term and tailored plans
  • Provides online consults and rehab programs
  • Only 4 minutes from the Toronto CBD

Cons

  • Often sticks to physio-based treatments only
  • No Saturday hours

Extremely Kind

Smiling faces from the moment you walk in to this very clean, quiet & professional space immediatley makes you feel welcomed. Fabiana was extremely kind and empathetic to my situation. Her demeanor is non-judgemental & her actively listening to my issues, made me feel heard. As we made a path forward that I understood & embraced, I felt confident that road to recovery isn’t as long as I imagined. Thank you!!

I will be continuing my physio appointments here

Amazing experience with Maureen Dwight. I’ve had back pain and been told I have scoliosis for years, Maureen was able to pinpoint the exact curvature I have, extremity of it, and which muscles to work on to ensure the curve doesn’t worsen. I will be continuing my physio appointments here with Maureen, along with Fabiana. Very happy with my first visit!

Calling Interventional Pain & Spine Specialists of Canada (IPSSC) accurate is…accurate. See, they use the latest ultrasound and X-ray tech to determine the most effective anti-pain intervention.

From what clients say, it’s a working system. We’ve spoken with Torontonians who reported they no longer suffer from back pain after a couple of sessions.

By sessions, we mean multi-modal ones. Everything is centred on physical therapy and non-opioid meds.

Both consults and treatments are OHIP-covered too. Just don’t forget to secure a referral and stay put for around two weeks.

Oh, and it’s US-trained specialists leading the journey. Most of them receive frequent praise for breaking down procedures or risks clearly and exploring multiple options.

If only timing issues weren’t recorded in the past. In some instances, meetings began 30 minutes behind schedule.

The front desk has also received criticism for acting dismissively, mainly towards people sitting in the waiting room.

Pros

  • Highly accurate diagnosis
  • Internationally trained staff
  • Multi-modal approach
  • Two-week wait for initial consults
  • Favours non-opioid treatment plans

Cons

  • Has been late to appointments before
  • Complaints about dismissive receptionists

Excellent physiatrist!

Our first appointment in this clinic with Dr. Jared McCallum.

Excellent physiatrist!

Knowledgeable and easy to understand. My husband , Gerry was the patient who had back pain.

We were seen promptly and receptionist very helpful.

We were not talked into having any procedures and the examination was very thorough!

Given simple written instructions to follow while considering the options and advised to call back to make an appointment if we wanted to proceed.

ChiroPath Spine & Posture Centre

Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Wed – 7 am to 8 pm
  • Tue – 3 pm to 8 pm

Website

Chiroprath’s record in managing pain and correcting posture can’t be downplayed. A fair share of their previous clients, chiefly those who dealt with scoliosis, neck/back pain, misalignment, headaches, and bad posture, saw glowing results,

Much of the credit goes to the clinic’s signature treatment system: Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP). It’s an evidence-based approach that corrects and restores the spine by combining various disciplines, like biology and physiology.

Limited range is the downside. The clinic goes heavy on chiropractic care, meaning it’s not the best choice for complex issues that require injections or imaging-led procedures (though they still base plans on X-rays).

Operating days are pretty limited as well. While the entries above run for at least five days, this one is only available for three.

The upside is we didn’t stumble upon patients who had gripes about Chiroprath’s staff. Our interviewees actually labelled them as friendly and communicative.

Pros

  • Specialises in posture correction
  • Nearly every patient reports positive outcomes
  • Structured CBP system and rehab model
  • Friendly staff
  • Modern and clean setting

Cons

  • Limited to mostly chiropractic care
  • Available for only three days

Really Improving Things for Me

This is such a wonderful clinic for spine health. I always look forward to coming in for treatment because the staff is so friendly. I came in with poor posture and a very sore back, but my regular appointments are really improving things for me. Both chiropractors take the time to ensure that you feel comfortable with a treatment plan. I highly recommend this place!!

Incredibly Informative

I developed back pain and poor posture over the years. It went from once in a while to every day chronic pain. I searched around and found ChiroPath Spine & Posture Centre. When I went for my first assessment, the employee’s were incredibly informative and attentive. I felt like they really listened to my pain and took into consideration my needs so I started treatment with them. It has been over a month and the treatment is working effectively. My posture has improved and my back pain went from daily sharp pains running down my spine to dull aches every once in a while. I most definitely recommend this clinic. They are so attentive to your needs and are very friendly.
