Watching your child struggle in math is tough to watch, especially when it affects their confidence and progress at school.
That’s why I went to work right away when my daughter faced the same challenge. For weeks, I scoured for the best math tutors in Toronto until I found one program worth paying for (got so hectic I ended up visiting some of these spas to decompress).
The results weren’t limited to marks alone. My child developed a more positive attitude towards math and gained valuable skills, such as improved financial literacy and problem-solving abilities.
Such outcomes can be achieved with the right support, and the tutors below have been providing that for years.
How much do math tutors charge in Canada per hour?
Math tutors in Canada typically charge $45–$80 per hour, with pricing often influenced by the format. Expect to pay $50–$100 for 1-on-1, in-person setups, $40–$80 for online sessions, and $60–$100 for classes held in tutoring centres.
Beyond the tutoring style, the tutor’s experience and the level of math being taught will influence the rates. Test prep specialists, for example, charge $70–$125 per hour.
How We Chose
The Math Guru

Address: 2541 Yonge St #3
Contact Details: +1 647-362-1883
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 1 pm to 8 pm
- Sat to Sun – 10 am to 4 pm
The Math Guru goes past equations. Every tutor here brings mental health awareness to lessons, mostly by putting a more positive spin on “failures.”
From experience, that system works. The centre’s environment is uber calm and positive, which makes it a great choice for students who usually dread math.
I’m also a fan of the matchmaking process. Students are only paired with tutors on the same wavelength, and finding a match doesn’t take ages with how broad and diverse the selection is.
When it comes to style, each learning plan is based on a student’s needs, though you can expect a generally engaging approach. Parents, including me, have seen it strengthen both confidence and understanding.
It’s crucial to message them early, however. Most tutors follow a 1-on-1 setup, so slots may run out.
In-home tutoring isn’t offered either. Classes only happen online, in-studio, or through workshops/boot camps.
Patient, Knowledgeable
We had a wonderful experience with Math Guru, and especially with Michael (tutoring Grade 12 Chemistry). He has a strong ability to break down complex chemistry concepts into clear, manageable pieces and explain them in multiple ways until they make sense.
What stood out most was how Michael built both understanding and confidence. His approach helped turn a challenging subject into something approachable, and the improvement in skills and self-confidence was noticeable.
Michael is patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in student success. We recommend Math Guru for high-quality 1:1 tutoring.

A True Gem
The Math Guru is exactly the place you want your student to be. Vanessa and her team are focused on meeting each person where they are on their math journey and helping them not only understand more math but create a better relationship with mathematics in general. A true gem.

Tutorax Tutoring

Address: 18 King St E Suite #1400
Contact Details: +1 647-560-7224
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Thu – 8:30 am to 6 pm
- Fri – 8:30 am to 6:30 pm
- Sat to Sun – 9 am to 5 pm
Besides tailored and effective plans, Tutorax Tutoring is a time-saver. Over 1,000 tutors comprise their staff, and that results in quick and personalised matching.
In fact, getting paired up with a tutor usually takes a day or less. In-home tutoring, exam prep, remedial support, and homework help requests are handled just as quickly.
That promptness continues the whole way. Parents especially love that managers follow up and provide feedback regularly.
Can’t say they’re yet to face slip-ups, though. For instance, a few students were matched with tutors who couldn’t follow through, leading to cancellations.
Paying up can also feel a bit rough, as Tutorax doesn’t have the cheapest rates around.
The upside is you’re splurging on tutors often praised for helping children understand complex math concepts.
Classes run as long as you want, too. They don’t really do rigid, set hours, except for summer courses.
Responds Quickly
My kids’ math tutor is great! She responds quickly to e-mails and accepts feedback with gratitude. She is organized and promptly schedules sessions. Highly recommended Tutorax. It’s also affordable and accessible. ~ Angie

Teachers on Call – Tutoring

Address: 2 St Clair Ave W 18th Floor
Contact Details: +1 416-519-8335
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 9 am to 8 pm
- Sat to Sun – 10 am to 8 pm
As you might guess, Teachers on Call employs licensed teachers. What’s neat about that is you’re hiring a trained professional who stays current with Canada’s provincial curricula.
The parents we messaged were quite happy with the curriculum-based approach. Many appreciate that children learn relevant topics, particularly “new math concepts” that even adults struggle with.
Coverage is also a strong point. Unlike other centres that specialise in select grades, this one spans the full K-12 range.
What’s more, they have specialised programs for students with learning disabilities and ADHD. Psychoeducational tests are used, and the teaching method follows the IEP (Individualised Education Plan).
One obvious downside is that they’re not designed for college-level students.
And in case it matters, Teachers on Call is one of the general tutoring services in the city, handling all K-12 subjects. We have some picks that focus solely on math.
Anyone who values longevity might brush past that, given they started in 1984.
Worked Diligently
I used Teachers on Call to assist my son in grade twelve with university level physics and functions. The team was quick to respond to my request for information, and were able to pair my son with a tutor that not only was an expert in the material, but took into consideration my son’s personality even though it was mid semester when we made the request.
The tutor he worked with was Gareth, who worked diligently with my son to make sure he understood not only upcoming subjects, but actually went back to previous material so my son could have the foundational understanding of the material. My child’s grades improved so much that his teachers called me to find out what support he was getting bc it was so effective. He was failing both these classes at the time he started working with Gareth, and his first unit test after was an 88%. The results were very quickly measurable. I can’t say enough good things about Gareth and the way he helped my son.
Teachers on Call worked around my schedule, had automatic invoicing and billing which made things really easy, and were all eager to make a match that would work for my son. I cant recommend them highly enough to anyone thinking about getting tutoring services.

The results show!
Teachers on call is FANTASTIC – I would definitely use them again and I’m so glad we found this service! Our daughter missed a ton of the first half of her Grade 1 year due to illness and felt she was behind the other students. Within a couple months, she was well ahead of the required reading level (she’s easily making it through books designed for 3rd/4th graders)
Diana and Natalie were her tutors. We leveraged both online and in-person, another great benefit when it comes to flexibility! Both of them were so great with Sienna & clearly great at what they do – the results show!
Thanks for everything Teachers on Call!

Mathnasium

Address: 189 The Donway W
Contact Details: +1 416-281-6284
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 2 pm to 8 pm
- Sat to Sun – 10 am to 4 pm
Among the reasons to pick Mathnasium is their in-house proprietary approach, the Mathnasium Method. It’s grounded in what students already know and only fills the gaps, all while introducing topics in a sequential order to avoid cognitive overload.
To properly gauge starting points, they run interactive verbal and written assessments that don’t have the pressures of a regular exam. The process comes at no cost.
Every tutor is also trained in the method before teaching. The core lessons aside, they’re shown how to make math fun and adaptive.
Does it deliver? Well, our interviewees reported improved skills, understanding, grades, and attitude towards math.
Programs only go up to K-12, though, and you’re looking at not-so-light rates. Most families spend between $200 and $300 each month.
On the bright side, their pricing model works like a gym membership, with predictable flat enrollment fees (location-dependent).
Friendly, Caring, Attentive
My child really enjoys attending Mathnasium every week and has shown amazing progression since the start. The staff (Antonio, George, Jason) and the instructors are friendly, caring, attentive and dedicated to ensuring a positive and fun learning experience and environment for the kids. Highly recommend the Don Mills location!

Enjoyed the Services
All I can say is that the branch on Don Mills is the one we decided to go back to after my daughter, Tiffany, enjoyed the services of Mathnasium in Grade 10 instead of a much closer Mathnasium branch mainly because of the excellent treatment we get, especially by Antonio who is amazing at his job. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Miss Math Tutoring

Address: 2017 Danforth Ave #300
Contact Details: +1 647-691-1177
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Thu – 2 pm to 10 pm
- Fri – 12 pm to 8 pm
- Sat to Sun – 9 am to 5 pm
It’s not a stretch to call Miss Math Tutoring flexible. To start, they have multiple scheduling options and plans that adjust to a student’s needs or schedule.
For example, their Casual Plan lets you book a 1-on-1 session anytime for $85 an hour without committing to a set program.
You can also hire the same tutor for an entire week through the Driven and Unstoppable plans, which come with extras such as access to practice tests.
If a $75–$85 hourly rate isn’t feasible, you can pair your child with one or two other students via the Team Player program. It’s only $50 an hour per learner.
Results-wise, it’s mostly positive. A large portion of their students got into well-ranked universities, after all.
Tutor count is a minor snag, though. With just 21 on board, Miss Math’s roster is relatively small.
You won’t find summer camps or exam-focused programs either.
Friendly and Personable
My entire experience with Miss Math Tutoring has been a pleasure, starting with my initial conversation with Aleksandra. My son’s math tutor, Justin, has been excellent – thorough, kind and upbeat, helping my son improve his mark substantially and gain confidence. The other associates, Tannia & Ingrid, are consistently prompt, professional and accommodating. Equally impressive, is how friendly and personable they both are. I highly recommend Miss Math Tutoring and have already done so to my peers.

I was kept in the loop
A great place to get some great support. My daughter in grade 11 appreciated the teacher and explanations over the first semester. It really helped her. As parent, I was kept in the loop, registration was easy to do, very nice and polite people are working and running this place! Thank you!
