Relieve your digestive issues quickly with the best gastroenterologists in Toronto

gastroenterologists-in-toronto
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

I have to admit that I used to have a lot of digestive issues. I remember the days when I struggled with persistent stomach pain, bloating, and discomfort, which seemed to have no clear cause or solution.

Nothing seemed to work until I found a great gastroenterologist. They figured out what was wrong and helped me get better!

Now, I want to help others who are facing similar problems. That’s why I created this list of the best gastroenterologists in Toronto. I hope it can guide others to the care they need.

How much does a visit to a gastroenterologist cost in Toronto?

Most services offered by a gastroenterologist in Toronto are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

If you’re not covered by OHIP, expect to pay around $300 for a consultation.

How We Chose

Experience and qualifications – We prefer board-certified gastroenterologists who have more than three years of experience in the industry.
Specialisations – We also chose those that cover a wide degree of specialisations, like gastroesophageal reflux disease, haemorrhoids, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Safety and hygiene – We looked at whether their facilities follow strict hygiene protocols to minimise the risk of infection among their patients.
Accessibility – We considered whether their clinics are near major roads and public transit stations. We also assessed whether they accept patients on most days of the week.
Professionalism – We evaluated whether these gastroenterologists always treat their patients respectfully and are always on time for their appointments. We also checked whether they respond to enquiries quickly.

The fine people who helped me resolve my digestive issues were from the Toronto Immune and Digestive Health Institute. This institute was founded in 2019 by Dr. Mark Silverberg, a gastroenterologist with more than two decades of experience in this field.

What initially drew me to TIDHI was their extensive gastroenterology offerings, including consultations, colonoscopies, gastroscopies, and treatments for IBD. They also provide mental health and wellness programs tailored to digestive diseases and advanced nutrition plans aimed at optimising digestive health.

This holistic approach was incredibly beneficial to me. In particular, their resident psychotherapist, Jessica Diener, designed an effective stress management plan that played a crucial role in my treatment.

If I had to pinpoint one downside, it would be the punctuality of their staff. On one occasion, I had to wait over 30 minutes for my gastroenterologist to arrive for our appointment.

Pros

  • Lead gastroenterologist has more than 20 years of experience
  • Offers behavioural health and wellness programs
  • Has nutritional health services

Cons

  • Unpunctual staff
  • Sometimes forgets to respond to enquiries

The TIDHI experience was by far the best

“I have had several colonoscopies in the US and Canada in both clinics and hospitals. The TIDHI experience was by far the best. The prep and arrival instructions were crystal clear. The surgeon, Dr. Tandon called me ahead of time to discuss my history and what to expect. The staff were warm yet professional. The surgeon briefed me in person and debriefed me after the procedure. Highly efficient too. 90 minutes from the time I entered the clinic until I left. Brilliant healthcare.”

I couldn’t be more satisfied with the entire process

“I had a procedure at this clinic this morning and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the entire process. Dr. Wood and his excellent team provided seamless and worry free healthcare. The site is extremely well run and staffed. I wish to thank them all.”

With over 20 years of experience, The Toronto GI Clinic is a veteran provider of gastroenterology treatments. They’re currently led by Dr. Michael Schiff, a renowned gastroenterologist who’s particularly known for his role in developing Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s advanced endoscopy services.

Their services are comprehensive, covering everything from colonoscopies to gastrointestinal cancer treatments. They also have you covered if you’re dealing with persistent issues like anal fissures—where they use Botox injections to provide relief in a minimally invasive way.

However, it’s a bit disappointing to learn that they sometimes double-book appointments. This has led to some instances of their gastroenterologists failing to show up to their appointments on time.

Pros

  • Has 20 years of experience
  • Can treat gastrointestinal cancers
  • Offers Botox injection for anal fissures

Cons

  • Unpunctual staff
  • Sometimes double-books appointments

My experience at the Toronto GI Clinic was exceptional

“My experience at the Toronto GI Clinic was exceptional. Dr. Schiff and Dr. Yang were very knowledgeable and patient. The staff (Stella, Joanna and Leonora) were courteous and friendly. Also, Connie was extremely supportive and empathetic, and took the time to provide me with answers to my questions after my procedure. Thank you all for your dedication to high quality client service and for putting patients first!”

I felt completely at ease and informed every step of the way

“I was referred by my doctor for a colonoscopy and as someone with major medical anxiety, I was super nervous. The staff from the reception to the doctor, and everyone in between (nurses, anesthesiologist) were incredibly helpful and kind. I felt completely at ease and informed every step of the way.”

Aside from their services, it’s also worth mentioning that they have a team of seven gastroenterologists who you can rely on. One of those is Dr. Stephen Taylor, who brings a wealth of experience from his work at Michael Garron Hospital.

Everyone at this clinic is amazing at what they do

“Everyone at this clinic is amazing at what they do. I’ve had three procedures done, and the last two times they were done by the same anesthesiologist and Dr. Dr. Taylor, who handled my procedure, is great at making you feel comfortable, and genuinely cares about your wellbeing and health. Highly recommend.”

If you’re looking for a convenient clinic for your gastroenterology needs, the Digestive Health Clinic is worth checking out. Founded in 2001, they have three locations in the GTA, making it easy to find one near you.

One thing I can praise them for is that their gastroenterologists have their own subspecialties, ensuring patients receive tailored and consistent care. For instance, Dr. Karen Chan, a gastroenterologist with more than a decade of experience, specialises in IBD and celiac disease.

In addition to treating GI diseases, this clinic offers procedures like colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and haemorrhoid treatment. They also provide specific tests, such as the lactose intolerance test, to help patients determine whether their diets are causing their GI issues.
