Move freely again with the best orthopaedic specialists in Toronto!

orthopaedic-specialist-toronto
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

I’m not a fan of ageing. Past the growing number of wrinkles and thinning hair (which these transplant clinics can help with), it comes with tons of musculoskeletal woes.

Good thing Toronto has orthopedic specialists and podiatrists who are stellar in fixing numbness, swelling, and injuries. One of the former even sorted my bunion, a result of my long-time obsession with tight shoes.

That’s how I know the fees sting, and that if you want to solve your joint, bone, or muscle problems without wasting cash, do your homework…which could take hours.

Or you could simply peek at the names our team rounded up below. Record-wise, they’re a step above the rest!

How much does a consultation with an orthopedic specialist cost in Toronto?

In Toronto, a consultation with an orthopedic specialist costs $360 to $500, with new patients typically paying more.
If you require surgery, expect to pay fees between $21,500 and $33,500 for total, partial, and bilateral knee/hip replacements. Day surgeries are usually $2,500 pricier.

How We Chose

Experience: To make this list, a specialist must have nearly 5 years of practice in orthopedics. We verified that through case studies, feedback, affiliations, interviews, and personal experience.
Qualifications: Board certifications, professional memberships, fellowship training, published work, and awards were consulted to score expertise, all obtained from relevant articles, clinic profiles, and registries.
Bedside Manners: Feedback, interviews, and experience helped us assess patient interactions. Specialists who regularly offer personalized treatment plans and clear, empathetic advice scored higher.
Accessibility: By calling and emailing, we determined whether the specialists (or the clinics/centres they work at) offer flexible scheduling and telehealth consultations.

Distance from the Toronto CBD also mattered, with options within an hour and by main roads prioritized.
Pricing: Consultation fees and procedure costs were compared to find the most cost-effective choices around. Proximity to Toronto’s general pricing range, transparency, and insurance coverage acceptance were also considered.

Dr. Barry Cayen

dr-barry-cayen

Address: 3695 Keele St, 2nd floor

Contact Details: +1 416-479-8969

Operating Hours: Mon to Fri: 9 am to 4 pm

Specialties: Hip/knee replacements, ACL reconstruction

Website

Dr. Barry Cayen’s record in hip and knee procedures locked his spot here. Several patients mentioned positive changes post-treatment, including pain-free movements and walking without a cane.

There’s also consistent positive feedback on his bedside manners. From what we’ve heard, the doctor tunes in to what you’re saying and doesn’t rush his explanations.

Booking a visit doesn’t happen right away, though. Beyond the fact that a referral is required in Ontario, many queue up at his clinic (you’ll usually hear from them after 14 business days).

The drive isn’t that quick either. Folks coming out of downtown Toronto should expect around 37–40 minutes of driving.

Personally, I think it’s worth it. Dr. Barry Cayen’s Masters in Public Health degree is from Harvard, and he has decades in the bag.

His team even provides ongoing support, so you’ll be guided and monitored throughout the recovery.

Pros

  • Stellar record in hip/knee replacements
  • Offers minimally invasive procedures
  • Has a master’s degree from Harvard
  • Decades of experience
  • Comprehensive follow-through

Cons

  • Nearly 40 minutes from the Toronto CBD (by car)
  • Slotting wait time can be lengthy

We couldn’t recommend Dr. Cayen and his staff more

My husband and family are deeply indebted to Dr. Cayen for his remarkable skills with the double hip replacement he preformed. He has given my husband a new lease on life – an amazing luxury for him as his range of motion and movement had completely deteriorated. We couldn’t recommend Dr. Cayen and his staff more!

Dr. Daniel Pincus

dr-daniel-pincus

Address: Sunnybrook Holland Centre, 43 Wellesley St E, Room 315

Contact Details: +1 416-967-8730

Specialties: Hip/knee replacements, hip resurfacing, hip revision

Website

Backed by an organized team and a strong hospital infrastructure, the award-winning Dr. Daniel Pincus offers a reliably structured journey. The majority of his patients agree with that claim.

Those who went to him for hip surgeries especially praised him. Don’t get us wrong, though; the doctor’s record with knee-related procedures is glowing as well.

We also have to mention the efficient workflow of his clinic. Maria (Dr. Pincus’ assistant) responds to messages and answers queries fast and clearly.

We love the on-the-spot diagnostics, too. Before you see him, they’ll take an X-ray, which has two major perks: it saves time, and you’ll see the real-time condition of your joints.

A hitch is the lack of weekend operations and telehealth consultations. Most of us are swamped from Monday to Friday, so there’s that.

Another weak point is the wait. Even with the smooth workflow, same-day slots are rare.

Pros

  • Specializes in hip/knee replacements
  • Efficient system with on-the-spot diagnostics
  • Only 7 mins from the Toronto CBD
  • Quick email responses
  • Award-winning

Cons

  • No telehealth option and weekend hours
  • Tough to get same-day appointments

Dr. Jas Chahal

dr-jas-chahal

Address: Hospital, 76 Grenville St

Contact Details: +1 416-323-6318

Operating Hours: Mon to Fri: 8 am to 5 pm

Specialties: Hip/knee/shoulder surgeries, cartilage repair

Website

If you’re looking for a specialist known for sorting out sports-related injuries, Dr. Jas Chahal is worth checking. He’s Toronto FC’s team surgeon (and former Chicago Bulls/White Sox physician), with more than 100 scientific publications.

The outcomes he delivers are just as outstanding! Almost every patient we hit up, including those who suffered severe injuries like meniscus tears, reported quick improvements, if not complete relief.

That said, not everyone found his staff friendly. Complaints about rude behaviour were brought up by a couple of interviewees.

Wait times at the clinic can go beyond an hour, too. Some even lined up for over three hours!

On a positive note, his procedures are advanced and minimally invasive. Autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis (AMIC) is a perfect example; it’s a one-step treatment proven to reduce pain and restore function.

Dr. Chala also operates in Hyper Regen, meaning patients get access to modern rehab equipment.

Pros

  • Specializes in treating sports injuries
  • Works in an advanced facility
  • Minimally invasive approach
  • Has worked with renowned sports teams
  • Over 100 peer-reviewed publications

Cons

  • Some rude staff
  • Long wait times

Very professional, communicative, and genuinely caring

Dr. Jas Chahal and the entire staff are top-notch. Very professional, communicative, and genuinely caring. The office environment is extremely clean, and they are fantastic at staying on schedule—my appointments always ran on time. Highly recommend!

Been Nothing But Amazing

Dr. Chahal is a truly talented surgeon/doctor. He’s been nothing but amazing and kind over the past year of me seeing him. He’s listened to me and made sure I was getting the best care. In the end I needed surgery on my knee and I felt so comfortable in his care. The staff at woman’s college hospital and himself really know how to make a patient feel at ease. I’m only three weeks post op and I feel so much better.

Dr. Reuven Lexier (Lexier Orthopedics)

dr-reuven-lexier

Address: 340 College St

Contact Details: +1 416-972-0206

Specialties: General orthopedics, surgeries, joint/limb injection, sports injury

Website

Comprehensive might be the best word to describe Dr. Reuven Lexier.

His clinic, Lexier Orthopedics, covers legal, clinical, surgical, and consultative needs. You can even purchase orthopedic products there or get yours evaluated.

Booking a slot doesn’t take weeks either. In fact, we’ve met people who landed appointments in about five days.

If your schedule is really tight, you can opt for a virtual consultation. Not every doctor on this list offers that.

Experience-wise, we have no gripes. He has clocked over 40 years in the field, performed 5,000-plus surgeries, and has made over 15,000 assessments.

Oh, and Dr. Lexier’s trophy case is stacked with awards, including the Eugene Rogala Award!

The problem? Not everyone in his clinic made a good impression. For instance, a handful of patients found the reception crew off-putting and preoccupied.

Occasional delays have also occurred, so his punctuality record isn’t perfect.

Pros

  • Over 40 years of experience
  • Quick booking timeline
  • Has carried out thousands of surgeries
  • Offers virtual consultations
  • Sells and rates orthopedic products

Cons

  • Some inattentive and unfriendly staff
  • Some delays

He is really amazing

Dr. Lexier had operated on both my feet over 10 years ago fixing both my painful bunions and toes. I am really lucky because my feet are now perfect and I can wear any shoes with no issues. You are in the best hands possible with Dr. Lexier. He is really amazing!

An Excellent Doctor

I had tendonitis since I started my pregnancy and I had no idea how to treat it. When I went to see Dr. Reuven Lexier, he gave me a couple of injections and I was fine again. He is an excellent doctor. He also has a very good sense of humor.

Dr. Jihad Abouali

dr-jihad-abouali

Address: 481 Danforth Ave

Contact Details: +1 416-546-7373

Operating Hours: Mon to Fri: 9 am to 2 pm

Specialties: Arthroscopic surgery, regenerative therapy, sports medicine

Website

The biggest reason I chose Dr. Jihad Abouali is his expertise in minimally invasive procedures. Using small incisions and specialized equipment, he has successfully treated major injuries such as meniscus, ACL, and hip labral tears.

In my case, it was cartilage damage he repaired with arthroscopic surgery (also works for knees, hips, elbows, wrists and shoulders). In about a month, I was back on track!

Patients can opt for full non-surgical treatments as well, often involving hyaluronic injections and platelet-rich plasmas. Based on his explanation, the methods can accelerate healing without suffering from the downtime of surgery.

Just brace yourself for a wait. Dr. Abouali’s high demand often results in booked-out days and limited slots.

His clinic’s closing time makes it worse. Ending the day at 2 pm is too early if you ask me.

Fortunately, the follow-up appointments are done efficiently; they adhere to a strict timeline.

Pros

  • Focuses on minimally invasive procedures
  • Award-winning
  • Offers non-surgical treatments
  • Smooth follow-ups
  • Trained internationally

Cons

  • Early closing time
  • Limited slots

A Very Positive Experience

After dealing with shoulder issues for over six years and getting nowhere with physio or other doctors, I finally found answers with Dr. Abouali. His team quickly arranged the right imaging and identified the problem accurately. Dr. Abouali had excellent bedside manner, was patient during every consult, and always made time to answer questions, whether by email or in person. The surgery went smoothly with no complications and recovery has been on track. Overall, a very positive experience and I’d highly recommend this surgeon.

My recovery exceeded expectations

I cannot thank Dr. Abouali enough for everything him and his team have done for me from booking my first appointment, to my surgery, to my clearance day — my last appointment. Dr. Abouali took the time to explain every step, genuine dedication to patient-centred care and treated me with such compassion and respect. Thank you for your incredible skill and expertise — I’m back to doing what I love, playing soccer again. I’ll always be grateful for the care, kindness, and confidence you instilled and the support you provided throughout my recovery. I couldn’t have asked for a better surgeon and outcome, my recovery exceeded expectations.
