The Best Memory Care Homes in Toronto Providing High-Quality Care

memory-care-homes-in-toronto
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

While assisted living facilities (assisted living toronto) provide general support for seniors, memory care homes offer specialised care for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia. These facilities feature comprehensive security and higher staff-to-resident ratios to ensure their residents remain safe and receive personalised attention.

In these caring environments, your loved one can get the dedicated care they need while still being able to live a dignified and fulfilling life.

To help you and your loved one, I’ve done some research on memory care facilities in Toronto you can trust.

How much does living in a memory care home in Toronto cost?

The average cost to live in a memory care home in Toronto is $4,670 per month.

However, your price can vary depending on the specific facility, the level of care required, and the amenities offered.

How We Chose

Quality of care – We picked memory care homes that can provide high-quality care for individuals with memory impairments. We assessed the experience of their staff and the mental wellness programs they offer.
Facilities – We looked at whether their facilities are of excellent quality by considering their amenities, layout, security features, and overall ambience.
Accessibility – We evaluated whether they’re near major roads and public transit stations. We also checked whether they’re open to visitors on most days of the week.
Professionalism – We prefer memory care homes with staff that are always kind and considerate towards their residents. We also checked whether they respond quickly to enquiries and concerns.
Price fairness – We considered whether their prices are fair given the quality of their facilities, the experience of their staff, and the number of services and programs they provide to their residents.

Founded in 2019, Queens Estate Retirement Residences is one of the more modern memory care homes available in Toronto. As part of the Metta Lifestyles group, they’re able to provide an advanced level of care to their memory care residents called Metta Memory.

This program uses a wide variety of activities like brain games and sensory activities to increase cognitive stimulation. It also affects how this home’s amenities and facilities are designed. For instance, there’s an aquarium in the dining hall to encourage eating.

Speaking of amenities, another thing I’d like to point out is their sensory murals. These interactive murals are meant to stimulate memories and senses of residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Unfortunately, they charge at least $7,000 a month for this amazing service. It might be wise to check out other options first.

Pros

  • Plenty of activities for cognitive stimulation
  • Has sensory murals
  • Well-designed facilities
  • Dedicated 24/7 nursing staff

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Location a bit far from Toronto’s eastern suburbs

Very pleased with the level of care she receives at the residence

“My mother resides at Queens Estate on the Memory floor. She moved in last year and I visit her there weekly. The adjustment was challenging for all of us but we as a family are very pleased with the level of care she receives at the residence. The staff is excellent and is led by Agnes, who shows her staff by example just what going the extra mile looks like. The main floor is always bright and changing with new themes and the activity calendar is packed with interesting and creative activities for everyone to enjoy. I’m very happy with the amount of love and the family style atmosphere they have created at Queens Estate. I would highly recommend considering this retirement home for your loved one.”

Moved my dad there a few months ago, and so glad I did!

“Moved my dad there a few months ago, and so glad I did! The staff are amazing! I can’t stress that enough. They all know him by name and treat him so well. There’s always activities and events going on. I feel safe knowing he’s there and taken care of. The building itself is lovely, modern and bright. The suites are the perfect size and also look great.”

Baycrest Terraces is a well-known retirement community that has been operating since 1977. They’ve gained massive popularity after their unique memory care program was featured in the Toronto Star.

Dubbed the Possibilities by Baycrest, this model offers customised care plans that provide round-the-clock care and assistance. It also provides comprehensive health services that include medication management, lab tests, and geriatric and neurology support.

Another amazing thing about this model is its heavy use of the latest technologies to improve their memory care residents’ quality of living. One such example is their Sentinare smart sensors, which detect falls and abnormal behaviours in real time.

They even have TrueLoo smart toilets to accurately assess and track the current health condition of their residents!

Sadly, they’re one of the most popular options in Toronto and have an extremely long wait list for new residents.

The Village of Humber Heights is a retirement community located in Etobicoke that was built on the site of an old school. They’ve been around since 2005 and are widely praised for their huge facilities and wide range of amenities.

This is especially true when it comes to their facility for memory care residents called Emma’s Neighbourhood. It features spacious outdoor spaces and various activity rooms to stimulate the cognitive abilities of its residents.

Of course, it also features 24/7 staff support to ensure residents can get the assistance they need ASAP.

Another thing that impressed me about this place is its Living In My Today program. It’s all about helping those with memory loss make meaningful relationships by encouraging them to participate in various social events like art and gardening workshops.

Unfortunately, they charge at least $7,050 a month for their memory care services.

I have nothing but amazing things to say

“My dad is a resident of this wonderful home. I have nothing but amazing things to say and am blessed he is in such a loving and caring home. Making the decision to put them in a home is always hard. He has advanced Alzheimer’s and the staff at Alderwood floor has taken my dad in like family, they are amazing. Every time I see him which is almost daily he is always clean and smells good and most importantly well taken care of. I can honestly say all staff in the village are wonderful and friendly”

The Briton House is a well-known retirement home that’s been around since 1976. They’re one of my top picks due to their impressive range of amenities, like an indoor garden and a recital hall.

When it comes to their memory care services, they can provide private studio-sized rooms with an open-door concept. These units come with safety bars, 24-hour nursing care, medication management, and help with daily activities.

They also offer a structured activity program called The Britonian Club to continuously improve and maintain their residents’ cognitive and social abilities. It uses a combination of games, entertainment, and intergenerational programs to ensure residents always have someone new to talk to.

Still, it should be noted that they’re currently understaffed and may not be able to properly take care of their residents sometimes.

Pros

  • Accessible location
  • State-of-the-art amenities
  • High-quality suites
  • Understaffed

Cons

  • Understaffed
  • Noisy urban setting

You can trust that residents are well cared for, safe and living their best life

“I researched many retirement homes in Toronto, and Briton House stood out for many reasons. Family owned and operated, an excellent reputation, positive referrals and reasonable pricing put Briton House on the short list. It was quick and easy to book a tour and we were impressed with the comfortable hotel-like atmosphere, relaxing atrium and amenities. Once my loved one moved in, the caring and competent staff provided an environment where she was able to enjoy regular meals, be supported with personal care and flourish, becoming the happy, social person she was before being diagnosed with dementia. You can trust that residents are well cared for, safe and living their best life.”

My sister and I are forever grateful that we found Briton House

“My sister and I are forever grateful that we found Briton House. When our mom developed dementia, we tried her in a couple of places with disastrous results because they didn’t have the expertise or sensitivity to deal with her disease. From the moment she moved into Briton House, we could breathe again because everyone involved in her care knew exactly how to make her feel safe and loved and content. The daily activities were creatively geared for the diminishing mind, and there was always lots of laughter. When we wanted to give Mom a change of scenery, we had options to go to the building: a lovely leafy atrium, where we could have tea, a “beach” room, with the soothing sound of the ocean, and an outdoor patio, with gardens, trees and sky. Finally, Mom loved her room: it was just big enough for us to make it comfy and cosy, but not so big that she felt lost. It was such a relief to know she was comfortable, surrounded by people who genuinely cared for her and looked after her so well. So it went for five years, until Mom died a few months ago in just the way we wished for her — at peace in her home sweet home. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all our friends at Briton House.”

Another memory care home that’s worth mentioning is One Kenton Place, located in North York. They focus on personalised care. Every resident has access to specialised therapeutic recreational programs that best suit their current mental ability and health condition.

Some noteworthy programs they offer are reminiscence therapy, pet therapy, and occupational therapy. These are conducted by staff members who have undergone dementia care training.

They also have in-house medical services to ensure residents won’t have to travel outside to receive quality care. These include optometry, dentistry, and psycho-geriatrician services.

It’s also worth mentioning that One Kenton Place passes with flying colours when it comes to security measures. Every door requires the use of electronic fobs to be opened.

Sadly, they currently have a waiting list for new residents due to the extremely high demand for their services.

Pros

  • Offers specialised therapeutic recreational programs
  • Advanced security features
  • Staff has received dementia care training
  • Has in-house medical services

Cons

  • Has a waiting list for new residents
  • Above-average prices
