As my dad approaches retirement, I want to make sure he enjoys this new chapter of his life to the fullest. He’s worked hard all his life, and now it’s time for him to relax and enjoy the fruits of his labour.
That’s why I’m looking into retirement homes. They offer a range of services and activities that can help him stay active, social, and well-cared for. Plus, it gives me peace of mind knowing he’s in a safe and supportive environment.
Here are my top picks so far. Come check out whether they’re a good option for you or your parents.
How much does living in a retirement home cost in Toronto?
It usually costs $5,000 per month to live in a retirement home in Toronto.
However, your price can vary based on factors like the size of the residence, the level of care required, and the amenities offered.
How We Chose
1. Hazelton Place Retirement Residence
Address: 111 Avenue Rd
Phone number: +1 416-928-0111
Business hours: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (MON-SUN)
One of my top picks is Hazelton Place Retirement Residence, a retirement home established in 2000. They offer independent living with various apartment-style suites, including studios and one- or two-bedroom options, all with kitchenettes.
I like that residents enjoy three meals a day, housekeeping, and a range of recreational and fitness programs. Plus, there’s a 24-hour nursing staff and an emergency response system here.
They also offer life enrichment programs, which keep residents active and engaged with fitness classes, arts and crafts, educational seminars, and social events. It’s also good that they’re located in Yorkville, making it very easy to visit my dad whenever I like.
However, living here can be pricey, with the most basic accommodations starting at around $5,925 per month. Even my dad agrees that the price is no joke.
We are finding living here most enjoyable
“We have just moved in and find residents and staff extremely friendly. The meals are very good with many options. They have a multitude of activities from which you can plan a very satisfying day. The choices range from a variety of exercises, cultural programs to discussions, movies, visits both in and out of the city. There is a dedicated medical staff here should an emergency arise or a health problem. We are finding living here most enjoyable and are very happy to have chosen Hazelton Place Retirement Residence. It often feels like we are on a cruise without the ship. Come visit Hazelton Place which is in the centre of the city close to shopping, museums, symphonies, ballet and theatre.”

The staff are very accommodating and helpful
“It was a big change for us as my husband and I moved to Hazelton Place from Montreal to be closer to our family.
Our suite is just beautiful as we brought our own furniture which made it very homely.
The staff are very accommodating and helpful. The food is very good, the chef trying to accommodate the needs of the many food demands. I would definitely recommend Hazelton Place to others who are looking for retirement homes.”

2. The Briton House
Address: 720 Mt Pleasant Rd
Phone number: +1 416-487-3392
Business hours: 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM (MON-SUN)
Founded in 1976, The Briton House can certainly be considered a veteran provider of retirement care in Toronto. Located east of Midtown Toronto, they provide independent living services with spacious suites, nutritious meals, housekeeping, and various recreational activities.
They also boast an impressive list of features like a year-round indoor garden, a glass-domed saltwater swimming pool, and a recital hall for cultural events. I already knew my father would love spending his days relaxing in that garden!
Another thing I like about this retirement home is their Independent Living Plus service. It’s great for those who need some assistance with daily activities like bathing but prefer living independently without an aide beside them most of the time.
Unfortunately, it seems they’re suffering from some manpower issues and may not always be able to keep a full staff to take care of their clients.
I am lucky to have chosen Briton House
“I am lucky to have chosen Briton House. It seems to fit my lifestyle and I am comfortable here. The food is good, often great, the neighborhood is perfect for walking and I have made a number of friends here. I feel part of an extended family.”

3. Christie Gardens Apartments & Care
Address: 600 Melita Crescent
Phone number: +1 416-530-1330
Business hours: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (MON-SUN)
Christie Gardens Apartments & Care has been a trusted name in elder care for over 40 years. They’re one of my top choices due to their not-for-profit model, which allows senior citizens to rent one of their apartments for as low as $3,400 per month.
For those who are thinking of living here permanently, they also sell life lease suites that you can get for $600,000.
As for their facilities, it’s a good thing that they feature impressive amenities like a beauty salon, a library, and even a theatre for events. They also have a top-notch wellness centre where clients can easily seek appointments with various medical professionals, including dentists, dermatologists, and dietitians.
Sadly, they’re an extremely popular option and have a waiting list for most of their accommodations. I can somewhat understand that, though, given how competitive their prices are.
Staff are very friendly and helpful
“My mom has been living at Christie Gardens for about a year and a half and she loves it. One of the things she appreciates is the community – many retired professors and teachers who love to continue learning and talking about ideas, politics, etc. The level of programming is geared toward an educated clientele, which suits her as well. Staff are very friendly and helpful. And the food is terrific!”

4. Chartwell Gibson Retirement Residence
Address: 1955 Steeles Ave E, North York
Phone number: +1 647-547-1811
Business hours: Open 24/7
Chartwell Gibson Retirement Residence is a part of Chartwell, one of Canada’s largest senior living operators. For their independent living services, they offer personalised support for daily activities, nutritious meals, and weekly housekeeping.
While all of these services sound nice, a key reason why this place piqued my interest is its pet-friendly policy. Here, you can bring your pet along so you can enjoy an environment that more closely resembles the home you used to live in.
I also appreciate the flexibility of their visitation policy, as they can accommodate overnight stays for visitors. Thankfully, getting a spot here isn’t that hard since they offer studio apartments for only $3,999.
However, one thing I have an issue with is their location. They’re quite far from the city centre, so I’d have to spend more time commuting just to see my father regularly.
A warm and welcoming environment with well-maintained facilities
“Chartwell Gibson Retirement provides a warm and welcoming environment with well-maintained facilities. The activities and social events keep residents engaged and active, contributing to their overall well-being. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a safe and vibrant community for their loved ones.”

A very nice, clean and comfortable retirement home for seniors
“A very nice, clean and comfortable retirement home for seniors. The staff is friendly, especially Jennifer, she showed me and my husband around and explained every detail patiently. One thing that was unexpected was no aging smell in the residence. We came across a few residents there, they all looked peaceful and happy. A great place to stay if financially able to afford.”

5. Rayoak Place
Address: 1340 York Mills Rd, North York
Phone number: +1 416-391-0633
Business hours: Open 24/7
Another North York-based retirement home worth checking out is Cogir Senior Living’s Rayoak Place. They’re one of my favourites, as they’re perfect for seniors who want to stay active and independent.
They offer spacious studio suites with big bay windows and skylights, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. Residents get three meals a day, weekly doctor visits, and access to a beauty salon and live entertainment.
Furthermore, there’s a 24-hour emergency response system here for your peace of mind.
This place is also one of the better options if you’re a member of the Canadian Association for Retired Persons (CARP). That’s because they provide a $2,000 move-in bonus to CARP members.
However, it should be noted that you’ll need to pay a bit higher than average if you want to enjoy many of their amazing services.
They are truly caring and understanding of the residents’ needs
“My mother has been at Rayoak for 15 months. It is a small facility, but since everything is on one floor – Nurses and staff are quick to respond. Interaction among residents is good. The lightness and brightness (overhead skylights) that greet you in the centrally located dining room can’t be beat. What stands out for Rayoak is the friendliness and considerateness of its staff. They are truly caring and understanding of the residents’ needs, even going the extra mile if it’s important for their well being. 5 stars for all its staff!”

We are so grateful for the warm welcome everyone at Rayoak provided to my sister to make her feel at home, and we are eternally grateful for the tender loving care provided to my sister each and every day.
