Whenever I’m down in the dumps, I buy myself a pie to cheer myself up. There’s just something homey about pies (my mom loved making one when I was a kid), and they’re also quite versatile. You can have a sweet pie or a savory one!
In my years living in Toronto, I’ve tried many bakeries and stores that sell pies. In my opinion, these are the best ones so far!
Wanda’s Pie in the Sky
Address: 287 Augusta Ave
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday—10 am to 6 pm
Contact Number: +14162367585
Wanda’s Pie in the Sky is probably the first one I ever tried (thanks to a friend’s recommendation), and I’ve been a patron since then. I’m also constantly recommending this place to other pie lovers because I think it deserves more love!
They have a wide variety of pie flavors here. Personally, I always go for fruit pies, such as the BC Raspberry or Wild Blueberry because they have the sweet and tart flavors that I like. The Niagara Peach one is also great because it’s so juicy!
When I’m craving something extra sweet, I’ll get any of the cream pies. The Chocolate Mousse is a favorite because it’s rich and intense. The silky texture of the mousse also pairs well with the flaky crust. Yum!
Pro Tip: Not all the flavors are available in the store every day. If there’s a particular flavor you want, you should pre-order to ensure you’ll get it. |
Sweetie Pie
Address: 326 Harbord St
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday—10 am to 6 pm
- Friday to Sunday—10 am to 7 pm
Contact Number: +16472453301
Another great spot if you’re looking for sweet pies is…well…Sweet Pie! This bakery has several locations in Toronto, but my favorite has to be the one on Harbord Street.
My favorite pie to order here is the Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie because it’s sweet with notes of vanilla, caramel, and even oak from the bourbon. The pecans also add a crunch texture that pairs well with the pie’s smooth filling.
Another one I like is the Lemon Meringue Pie. The lemon curd is sour enough to make your lips pucker, but it’s also sweet enough that you can shove spoonfuls in one go. The meringue is fluffy and toasted at the same time, and it tastes like a marshmallow!
Pro Tip: You can book their catering services for your event. |
Gaucho Pie Co.
Address: 346 Westmoreland Ave N Unit 105
Operating Hours: Thursday to Saturday—11 am to 5 pm
Contact Number: +14167922929
If you’re like me, then you probably consider empanadas a kind of pie. After all, they have a flaky crust with a filling inside! If the answer is yes, you should check out Gaucho Pie Co.
This bakery specializes in Argentinian treats, and the main hits are the empanadas. You can try the titular gaucho (traditional beef empanada), but my favorite is the jerk chicken empanada, which is savory, earthy, and spicy!
If you don’t eat meat, don’t worry because there are vegetarian and vegan options! I personally like the jackfruit shawarma one. I didn’t even know I was eating jackfruit and not meat. The texture is very similar!
Pro Tip: I recommend pre-ordering your favorite empanada flavors because some of them are not going to be available every day. |
New Pie Co.
Address: 1561 Dundas St W
Operating Hours:
- Sunday and Thursday—11 am to 4 pm
- Friday and Saturday—11 am to 5 pm
New Pie Co. is an underrated spot on Dundas Street. Every pie is a work of art by the owner (a passionate baker who loves pies), which is why I always take photos before eating a slice.
The one I always get back to is the Chocolate Butter Tart Pie. The crust is so crispy and flaky, and the filling is both sweet and tart. I like that it’s covered with a layer of dark chocolate ganache because it makes the pie even more indulgent.
While not technically a pie, the Cinnamon Butter Mochi is also a go-to purchase. It’s so sweet, buttery, and addictively stretchy!
Pro Tips: If you’re a big fan of the pies here, you might want to join the Pie of the Month Club. Every month, you’ll get a special pie delivered straight to your door! Do you want to learn how to bake pies? The owner (Shiela Labao) sometimes hosts baking classes! Check her Eventbrite page for more details! |
Montmartre Bakery
– From: dolcelikehoney
Address: 105 Midwest Rd, Scarborough
Operating Hours:
- Tuesday to Thursday—8 am to 6 pm
- Saturday—8 am to 4 pm
Contact Number: +14167577771
Montmartre Bakery has been around since the 1960s, so it’s not a surprise that it’s a staple among the locals. This spot is mostly known for its different kinds of bread available, but there are also pies available here!
I’m a big fan of the Apple Crumble Pie here. The apple filling has the right amount of sweetness, and the crumble adds a different texture that elevates every bite.
I also really like the Lemon Meringue Pie because of its sweet and sour flavor combinations. The filling is also silky smooth, and I love eating it with the pillowy meringue.
Pro Tip: If you’d like to pre-order, it’s best if you call them because the order form on the website doesn’t work sometimes. |
Gerrard Street Bakery
Address: 635 Gerrard St E
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday—9 am to 5 pm
Contact Number: +14164654567
If you prefer savory pies, then you might like Gerrard Street Bakery. After all, this place is famous for its pot pies and empanadas!
Braised beef is my favorite pot pie flavor because it tastes so rich and savory, and the beef chunks are so tender. The chicken one is also great because it tastes very comforting (it’s almost like soup but in pie form, if that makes sense).
This bakery sells tarts as well. I know tarts and pies are technically different from each other, but they also share some similarities. If you like tarts, I recommend getting the apple crumble. It’s sweet and has a satisfying crunch!
Pro Tip: I recommend coming here as soon as the bakery opens so that you can get your order fresh and still steaming. |
Pie Squared
Address: 21 St. Clair Ave W
Operating Hours:
- Sunday to Wednesday—12 to 9 pm
- Thursday to Saturday—12 to 10 pm
Contact Number: +16473497432
I admit it’s the punny name that first caught my attention, but once I tasted a pie here, I instantly became a fan. This place features a wide variety of pies—from UK-style savory pies to individual-sized pizza-style ones.
For the savory options, I’m a big fan of the butter chicken pie. I mean, I already love butter chicken on its own, so of course, I’m going to love the pie version. The pie also comes with a homemade bechamel sauce that makes the snack even creamier.
When I’m craving something sweet, I usually get the key lime pie jar. It’s sweet and tart, and the graham crumble and banana chips add that satisfying crunch.
Pro Tips: If you want to make your pie a filling snack, you can add fries/salad and a drink to your order. If you like the pies here, you might want to buy frozen pies from this bakery. You can reheat these pies whenever you want at home. |
The Pie Commission
Address: 927 The Queensway, Etobicoke
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Saturday—11 am to 6 pm
- Sunday—11 am to 5 pm
Contact Number: +14168487424
What I like about the pies at The Pie Commission is that they’re always so flaky and buttery like a croissant. Plus, they’re also filled with so much filling that I have to be careful when eating, or else everything will spill.
The butter chicken pie is so indulgent and rich, while the chicken mushroom pot pie is comforting. If you don’t eat meat, try the sweet potato masala, which tastes both sweet and savory with a kick of heat.
For people with a sweet tooth, I recommend the coconut custard pie. The filling is thick and velvety, and it has a toasted layer on top that’s so satisfying to crack. The mixed berry crumble is a must-try as well—sweet, tart, and crunchy!
Pro Tip: If you’re planning a special event, you can book this bakery’s catering services. |
Phipps Bakery and Dessert Shop
Address: 420 Eglinton Ave W
Operating Hours: Monday to Saturday—9 am to 5 pm
Contact Number: +14164819111
Phipps Bakery and Dessert is a recommendation I got from a friend, and I’m so thankful I tried it because now, it’s one of my favorite places to get pies (and other desserts) as well.
I really love the Chocolate Pecan Pie because it’s so decadent with its chocolate crust and fudge frosting and the Key Lime White Chocolate Mousse Pie because it balances the sweet and sour flavors perfectly.
Another one that I always get back to is the Lemon Shortbread Pie. The crust is a shortbread, so it’s more crumbly than flaky, while the lemon filling is silky and tangy. The powdered sugar topping the pie adds enough sweetness to undercut the sour notes.
Pro Tip: You can pre-order your pies, which I recommend you do so that you can get your preferred flavor (some flavors aren’t available daily). |
Sharman’s Proper Pies
Address: 1972 Danforth Ave
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday—9 am to 6 pm
- Saturday and Sunday—10 am to 4 pm
Contact Number: +14169017437
Sharman’s Proper Pies is where you should go if you want to eat pies for your main course and dessert. This bakery has a wide variety of savory pies (especially steak pies) and sweet pies!
I love getting the steak and cheese pie because it’s so filling and delicious (the gravy is rich with notes of rosemary and tomato). I recommend pairing it with a pint of beer, especially if you’re dining out with your friends.
For dessert, get the blueberry pie. It’s a classic, and this place really nails it down. The crust is perfectly golden and crispy, and the filling is thick and retains the rich sweetness of wild blueberries.
Pro Tip: Give a gift card from this bakery to a friend who loves pies just as much as you do! |
Pies by Squires
Address: 202 Ossington Ave
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday—2 to 11 pm
In a way, Pies by Squires transports you to the UK through their food. This spot specializes in British cuisine, and luckily, you can find some classic pies on their menu!
The Beef and Ale Pie is my go-to choice. It’s savory perfection, and since it’s served with mashed potatoes or hand-cut fries and mushy peas, it fills my empty stomach in no time.
I also recommend the Chip Shop Chicken Curry Pie, especially if you like your food a little bit spicy. If you don’t eat meat, then you might like the Cheese and Onion Pie (somehow, this tastes like French onion soup in pie form).
Pro Tip: Sometimes, this restaurant sells frozen pies that you can simply bake at home when you’re hungry. Check the store on their website to see what products are available. |
The Happy Bakers
Address: 3469 Lake Shore Blvd W
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Saturday—8 am to 6 pm
- Sunday—9 am to 4 pm
Contact Number: +14167089525
The Happy Bakers is a small boutique cafe on Lake Shore Boulevard that you shouldn’t overlook! I always feel cozy and at home here, which is why I’m always going back.
Tourtière (French-Canadian meat pie) is the bestseller here, and it’s also my favorite. It’s jam-packed with pork and beef, and everything is well-seasoned, so every bite is a savory explosion with a strong kick of spice afterward.
If you prefer a sweet pie, you should get the Peach Blueberry Pie. Of course, I’m biased because it’s my favorite here, but it’s really good. The peach’s decadent sweetness really complements the blueberry’s slight tanginess.
Pro Tip: This restaurant is more than happy to cater for your event. If you’re interested, you can call them. |
Kensington Natural Bakery and Cafe
Address: 460 Bloor St W
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday—11 am to 7:45 pm
Contact Number: +14165341294
If you’re looking for a place that sells vegan pies, then look no further than Kensington Natural Bakery and Cafe!
I like getting the pumpkin pie here (yes, even when it’s not Halloween). The filling’s texture is silky smooth like a custard, which is a contrast to the crispy crust. The blueberry pie is also a hit. The crumbly top layer adds a satisfying crunch.
If savory is your preferred flavor, you can’t go wrong with the Vegan Mincemeat Pie. I forgot to ask what the filling is, but it’s so close to the flavor and texture of real meat that I always have to remind myself that this is vegan!
Pro Tip: If you’re sensitive to gluten, you’ll be delighted to know that the pies here have gluten-free versions! |
Mabel’s Bakery and Specialty Foods
Address: 2755 Dundas St W
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday—7 am to 7 pm
- Saturday—7 am to 6 pm
- Sunday—8 am to 6 pm
Contact Number: +14165194375
Mabel’s Bakery and Specialty Foods has been around since 2008, and in that time, it has garnered the trust of Toronto citizens. In fact, it’s become so beloved that there are actually four locations within the city!
No matter where you choose to go, you can enjoy the same variety of pies. I’m fond of the Sour Cherry Pie, which is saying something because normally, I hate cherries. But the sweetness and sourness levels are perfectly balanced.
When it’s strawberry season, don’t forget to try the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. It tastes sweet, tangy, and intensely fruity, but you might also notice subtle ground cinnamon flavors with every bite.
Pro Tips: This bakery also sells a few pantry items like fruit preserves, jellies, jams, and chutneys. There are even packaged cookies and granola. There are no seats available inside, but you can sit down on the steps as you’re finishing your snack. Just make sure you’re not in the way of other customers. |
