We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

If there’s one thing I want to fix should I get transported back to the past, it’s my stubbornness. Wearing a lot of tight shoes back then has led to my right foot developing a nasty case of bunion.

Thankfully, I found a great orthopaedic surgeon. My operation was a complete success, and I’m able to walk comfortably again!

To ensure others get the same amazing care as I had, I decided to compile the best orthopaedic surgeons in Toronto you can rely on!

How much does an orthopaedic surgery cost in Toronto?

Orthopaedic surgeries are generally covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) if they are deemed medically necessary.

However, if you’re not covered by OHIP or if you’re seeking treatment from a private clinic, the average cost for an orthopaedic surgery usually hovers around $12,220.

How We Chose

Qualifications and experience – We chose certified orthopaedic surgeons who have more than three years of experience in the industry.
Specialisations – We also picked various surgeons who specialise in specific areas, such as sports injuries, joint replacements, or spine surgery.
Professionalism – We assessed whether they always treat their patients with respect and are always on time for their appointments. We also looked at whether they respond to calls and emails quickly.
Accessibility – We evaluated whether their clinics are near major roads or public transit stations. We also checked whether they’re available on most days of the week.
Facilities – We prefer orthopaedic surgeons who have access to state-of-the-art medical equipment, like the NanoScope system, when carrying out their treatments.

Dr. Jihad Abouali is a highly renowned orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy. He has more than a decade of experience performing surgeries in the Toronto East General Hospital.

One key advantage he has over his peers is his special training in performing minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries. He only requires tiny incisions to carry out his surgeries, ensuring the patient can enjoy a faster recovery.

Currently, he can perform surgeries that will treat issues like rotator cuff tears, ACL tears, and cartilage injuries.

It’s also worth mentioning that he also offers advanced non-surgical treatments, like nStride and platelet-rich plasma, to treat conditions like bursitis and osteoarthritis.

Unfortunately, his immense popularity means he tends to get fully booked quickly. It also doesn’t help that he only sees patients until 2 AM on weekdays.

Pros

  • More than a decade of experience
  • Performs minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries
  • Offers nStride and PRP treatments
  • Doesn’t require a doctor’s referral

Cons

  • Tends to get fully booked quickly
  • Extremely limited availability

My knee is back to 100% and it’s all thanks to him!

“Tore my ACL playing basketball in August 2023. Was referred to Dr. Abouali, and very grateful that I was! Dr. Abouali was very knowledgeable and approachable. He made sure to answer all my questions pre/post surgery, and helped me along my journey to rehabilitate my knee. Would without a doubt recommend anyone to go to Dr. Abouali for any type of sports injury/surgery that is required. My knee is back to 100% and it’s all thanks to him!”

If you’re experiencing an issue with your hip or knee, come check out Dr. Barry Cayen. An orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery, he has over 14 years of experience in the industry.

Currently, he can provide advanced treatments like direct anterior hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, and knee replacement. What’s cool though is that he has access to state-of-the-art equipment, like the ZimmerBiomet ROSA robot, to carry out these treatments more accurately and effectively.

I also appreciate the fact that he can provide platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid injections to cure ailments like knee arthritis and inflamed tendons.

However, his advanced treatments are only offered in Humber River Hospital, a medical institution that has received flak for its long waiting lines on most days.

Pros

  • 14 years of experience
  • Specialises in hip and knee surgery
  • Has access to state-of-the-art equipment
  • Offers PRP and hyaluronic acid injections

Cons

  • Long waiting lines
  • Unavailable on weekends

This is how healthcare should be

“I had a total hip replacement surgery last Wednesday. Flew home Saturday morning and feel great today. It’s Sunday morning, no pain, no problem getting out of bed, I am walking comfortably with a cane. I had a bit of apprehension about doing this and the cost. My wife and I discussed It and it is the best money we have ever spent. Staff are great and attentive. This is how healthcare should be.”

A really great doctor and surgeon

“Dr. Cayen replaced my left knee 6 months ago and I feel 15 years younger. The pain I had with arthritis is gone and my activity levels have increased significantly. He is a really great doctor and surgeon”

As one of Toronto’s largest medical institutions, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre offers some of the most comprehensive orthopaedic care available. For that reason, I decided to get my bunionectomy done here.

They offer a wide range of surgeries like joint replacements, spine surgeries, sports medicine procedures, and trauma surgeries for complex fractures.

It’s also worth mentioning that they focus on joint preservation techniques like osteotomy (realigning bones), cartilage restoration, and biological treatments using PRP and stem cells to promote natural healing.

Of course, all these impressive treatments were only made possible by their highly skilled staff. The head of their orthopaedic surgery department, Dr. Joseph Schatzker, is best known for his involvement in developing new fracture fixation treatments.

My only major critique about Sunnybrook is that I had to wait a couple of days before I was able to secure an appointment.

Pros

  • 76 years of experience
  • Offers stem cell treatments
  • Highly skilled staff
  • State-of-the-art facilities

Cons

  • Long waiting lines
  • Sometimes cancels appointments abruptly

Sunnybrook hospital has been one of our best hospital experiences

“Thank you to all of the kind and dedicated nurses, personal workers and to the wonderful doctors. Especially Dr. Isenberg and Dr. Jordan who went above and beyond helping our family. Truly appreciated during such a difficult time. Sunnybrook hospital has been one of our best hospital experiences.”

This hospital has been a blessing in my life

“I was hospitalized for 9 days due to a bike accident. I got 2 surgeries. I want to tell everyone that this hospital has been a blessing in my life. Extraordinary surgeons, doctors, nurses and general personnel who work here. I’m alive and in good health. God bless this Hospital!”

Dr. Duong Nguyen is a highly skilled orthopaedic surgeon who’s been helping people in Toronto since 1986. He’s got a pretty impressive resume, as he won several noteworthy awards, like the J.C. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Sports Medicine Research.

One thing I should mention is that he specialises in ACL and sports orthopaedic surgeries. That’s why he’s able to provide computer-assisted treatments like meniscus surgery, osteochondral OCD repair, and surgical repair of cartilage defects.

More importantly, he can do paediatric ACL surgery, which is an amazing choice should your kid suffer from an ACL tear while playing sports.

Sadly, I heard that some of his former patients were treated dismissively. It’s also a bit inconvenient that his clinic is a bit far from Toronto’s eastern suburbs.

Pros

  • 38 years of experience
  • Specialises in ACL and sports orthopaedic
  • Offers paediatric ACL surgeries
  • Has received several awards

Cons

  • Sometimes dismissive
  • Clinic is a bit far from Toronto’s eastern suburbs

He’s the best in Toronto

“Just had right knee ACL surgery by Dr. Nguyen on December 1, 2017. To save you time, I recommend anyone to get their surgery done by him. He’s the best in Toronto. He takes pride in his work and takes his time to ensure perfection. I’ve met two people who had their knees done by Dr. Nguyen and they all came back 100% and spoke highly of him. I will also be doing my physiotherapy at his clinic. I will update my review if there’s any problem.”

I am thankful for what he has done

“I was fortunate to be under the amazing care of Dr Nguyen for my knee. He was so kind, helpful, and professional. I knew from the start I was in the best hands. I am thankful for what he has done and continues to do.”

5. Dr. Jesse Wolfstadt

dr-jesse-wolfstadt

Address: Mount Sinai Hospital, 600 University Ave Suite 476D

Phone number: +1 416-586-4800 ext. 2835

Business hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (MON-FRI)

Website

As one of Mount Sinai Hospital’s top orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. Jesse Wolfstadt is certainly an amazing choice for almost anyone. He has over eight years of experience performing treatments like partial knee replacements, total knee replacements, and hip replacements.

One thing that really impressed me about him is his mastery of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). He’s well versed in adopting pain and nausea control techniques to ensure a patient can recover from a major surgery ASAP.

Furthermore, if a patient meets the necessary criteria, he can perform same-day discharge for joint replacements, meaning patients can go home the same day they have surgery.

Unfortunately, he can’t provide much assistance outside of the treatments I’ve mentioned earlier. It also doesn’t help that his hospital tends to experience long waiting lines on most days.

Pros

  • 8 years of experience
  • Specialises in hip and knee replacements
  • Knowledgeable in ERAS techniques
  • Offers same-day discharge treatments

Cons

  • Limited scope of specialties
  • Long waiting lines

Highly recommended, ultra professional care

“I had total hip replacement, posterior approach, by Dr. Wolfstadt on the left Feb 2019, and the right Nov 2020. Remarkably, the recovery and experience from the second replacement was far smoother than the first. Hard to imagine given the smooth ride from the first.

I underwent both surgeries at an outpatient home the same day at 2-3 pm. Highly recommended if it is suitable for you. No hospital stay, home food, and I was monitored very closely.

In particular I appreciated the availability of the hospital auxiliary staff AND Dr. Wolfstadt, on a daily basis.

Highly recommended, ultra professional care, thank you.”

-Doug Cowdrey, Google Reviews

Dr. Wolfstadt really went above and beyond for me

“Dr. Wolfstadt really went above and beyond for me, from seeing me back in July for my consultation and caring about more than just my knee, as I had issues with my hips, lower back and neck having AS. He has continued to take care of me even now, having me come down to treat my post surgical site as there’s a cut that doesn’t seem to heal. If you have the chance to have a surgery by the hands of Dr Wolfstadt I would highly recommend him, as I am walking better than I have in the last 4 years of my life all thanks to his care!

Thank you Dr. Wolfstadt!”
