We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

I’ve recently decided that it’s time to take living healthier seriously. That means switching to nutritious foods and adding health supplements to keep my diet balanced and packed with the good stuff.

I’ve realized that having a health food store you can count on makes all the difference. I’m no health expert myself, so it’s important for me to have a store that reliably offers healthy foods and authentic supplements.

Since finding a great one is a bit hard to do if you’re just starting your health journey, I went ahead and made a list of the best ones you’ll find in Toronto.

How We Chose

Product variety – We prefer health food stores that cater to a wide range of diets, such as gluten-free, vegan, and keto options. We also chose those that sell specialty items like herbal teas and superfoods.
Product quality – We evaluated whether their food items have certifications like organic, non-GMO, and fair trade. We also checked if their health supplements follow Health Canada regulations.
Accessibility – We looked at whether these health food stores are near public transit stations and major roads. We also assessed whether they’re open on most days of the week.
Customer service – We checked whether their staff members always treat their clients with respect and are quick to lend assistance when needed. We also considered whether they respond to enquiries quickly.
Price fairness – We also evaluated whether their prices are fair given their product quality, accessibility, and any loyalty programs or bulk purchase discounts they offer.

Let’s start with Healthy Planet, my go-to store for vitamins and organic snacks. They’re very easy to visit since they have 28 stores across the GTA where they offer gluten-free groceries, health supplements, eco-friendly beauty products, and more.

A huge reason why I prefer shopping here is their Healthy Points Rewards Program. You earn points when you shop, and those points turn into useful discounts later.

And with how annoying it is to go outside sometimes, I like that they offer free shipping for orders over $60. They even have a mobile app (available on App Store or Play Store), so it’s quite easy for me to order from the comfort of my home.

However, one thing I dislike is their confusing return policy. Certain items, like nutrition bars, can’t be returned or exchanged for any reason whatsoever.

Pros

  • 28 locations in the GTA
  • Has a loyalty program
  • Free shipping on orders over $60
  • Has a mobile app

Cons

  • Certain items can’t be returned or exchanged
  • Some rude staff

Never got disappointed by them

“Reasonable prices!! Lot of variety of supplements!! Attractive offers!! Helpful staff!! The man on the first floor is especially helpful in identifying supplements and medication. He’s really knowledgeable and helped me many times when I was there. Well organized and looks attractive!! Been a customer with Healthy Planet for a long time and never got disappointed by them. Highly recommended to anyone trying to purchase sports supplements or OTC medications. Always have a best offer for coconut water 🙌🏾🙌🏾”

2. Good Rebel

Products offered: Vegan cheese, meat, seafood, dairy, fair trade ingredients, and more

Business hours: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM (MON-SUN)

Good Rebel is a health food store founded in 2016 that focuses mostly on offering vegan options. They’ve got an impressive selection of over 100 types of vegan cheese alone (seriously!), plus all kinds of plant-based meats, snacks, and specialty treats like fancy vegan chocolate truffles.

I find them to be a good pick for businesses looking to provide healthier meals for their customers. That’s because this store offers discounts for bulk purchases.

Additionally, they can do same-day delivery in Toronto for only $15. That price already covers the insulation and packaging materials, so I think it’s a pretty good deal overall.

However, I’d like to note that any bulk purchases are considered a “final sale.” This means you can’t return or exchange the items if needed, which can be a bummer.

Pros

  • Wide variety of vegan options
  • Discounts for bulk purchases
  • Can do same-day local delivery

Cons

  • No returns on bulk purchases
  • Some products aren’t stocked regularly

Wide selection of products hard to find elsewhere

“Very well-stocked vegan boutique with a wide selection of products hard to find elsewhere. They have vegan evaporated milk for example, as well as many types of vegan cheese, vegan honey, snacks, beauty products, candy bars, vegan meat and desserts in the freezer. It’s nice and clean and uncluttered as well. Friendly customer service!”

More vegan produce than you can shake a stick at

“This place is awesome. More vegan produce than you can shake a stick at. I love their huge selection of plant-based proteins. Would definitely recommend checking this place out if you’re curious about going plant-based, or if you’re already a card-carrying vegan. They also have cute merch!”

If you’re totally new to all this healthy living stuff, you’ll probably want to check out Nature’s Emporium. It’s a family-run health food market that has been around since 1993 and now has six locations in the GTA.

They’re pretty packed with a lot of the good stuff, including fresh fruits, vegetables, gluten-free groceries, and sustainably farmed seafood and meats. They even sell health supplements and natural skincare products!

Aside from the variety of their goods, another thing I like is the free store tours. They have holistic nutritionists who’ll walk you around, share advice, and recommend products based on your needs.

Sadly, they’re not exactly a budget-friendly store, so you’ll want to plan around that. You can probably save some money by taking advantage of their weekly deals.

Pros

  • Six locations in the GTA
  • Wide variety of products
  • Offers free store tours and nutritional advice
  • Has weekly discounts

Cons

  • Above-average prices
  • May take 24 hours to respond to enquiries

Karma Co-op Grocery Store is a good spot if you want to support local farmers. Since 1972, this member-run co-op has been all about selling fair trade, organic, and local products.

Do you need to become a member to shop here? Thankfully, no. But being a member comes with perks like discounts and the ability to special-order items they don’t usually stock.

Another good thing about this store is the many events and workshops they host regularly. These are open to everyone and are usually about teaching healthy recipes and nutritional advice.

That said, their prices are a bit higher than what you’d see in other stores. You should probably join their membership program if you’re interested in shopping here often.

Pros

  • Sells locally-made products
  • Has a membership program
  • Members can request special orders
  • Regularly hosts healthy living workshops

Cons

  • Slightly above-average prices
  • Inconsistent operating hours

The co-op model is a win for food sovereignty

“Great ethical and local grocery store. The co-op model is a win for food sovereignty and means that it is people, not profit driven. Some items are fair priced and others are pricier but still on par with other high end organic stores. I love to refill my cleaning supplies here such as dish soap, laundry detergent and even lotion and shampoo. You can also get beans, nuts, and dried fruits in bulk and it’s all high quality! You don’t have to sign up to be a member to shop but membership is still a reasonable price. Please check this place out 🙂”

It’s a hidden gem I wish I knew about sooner

“I’ve been grocery shopping here since 2020 and it’s the only store where I feel confident that my purchases are as socially and environmentally responsible as possible, not to mention healthy. I have a deep trust in what is sourced, and the prices are the best in the city as far as organic, locally grown and fair trade. It’s a hidden gem I wish I knew about sooner.”

Another health food store you can check out, especially if you love discounts, is Goodness Me! Natural Food Market. This store started back in 1981 in Hamilton and now has nine locations across the western parts of the GTA.

They’ve got a solid selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, and even ready-to-cook meals. Their stores even have their own salad and smoothie bars if you want to enjoy something on the go.

And you don’t have to pay a pretty penny for most of these since they regularly offer discounts every week. On top of that, there’s a 10% discount for senior citizens, students, and first-time online shoppers.

Speaking of locations, that’s probably the one downside. You won’t find any of their stores in central and eastern GTA. If you live in those areas, I recommend you take advantage of their free delivery for orders over $59.

Pros

  • 9 locations in the GTA
  • Has salad and smoothie bars
  • Has weekly discounts
  • 10% discount for students and senior citizens
  • Free delivery for orders over $59

Cons

  • No stores in central and eastern GTA
  • Some products aren’t stocked regularly
