As Pride Month approaches, Toronto is buzzing with excitement for the Inside Out 2SLGBTQ+ Film Festival, now in its 35th year. Running until June 1, there’s still time to catch some incredible films before it wraps up.

Personally, I find this year’s lineup truly impressive, with 28 feature films and 69 shorts, all spotlighting queer stories from around the world.

One of the more memorable shows I watched was Really Happy Someday. It completely pulled me in!

The film follows a rising star navigating Toronto’s theatre scene after his transition. Every moment felt raw and personal, making it one of those stories that stays with you long after you leave the cinema.

I also had the chance to see the film festival’s opening film, Outerlands. It certainly was the right pick, since it’s packed with so many emotional scenes that many of us can relate to, like the struggles of making ends meet in today’s economy.

If you haven’t seen these films yet, don’t worry. There are still plenty of feature-length and short films to check out before the festival ends.

I grabbed a 6-pack ticket package, so I’m planning on catching more screenings. I’m especially curious about South Korea’s Lucky, Apartment. I love seeing how queer experiences differ across cultures.

Beyond the films, the industry panel events are another highlight this year. Producers and directors will be sharing insights on how the rise of independent filmmaking is reshaping the modern industry. I can’t wait to hear what they have to say.

Oh, and to cap things off, the festival’s awards ceremony on May 31 will celebrate the best films in two categories: Canadian productions and international films.

It will also crown the winner of the Pitch, Please competition, where filmmakers get just two minutes to deliver their best power pitch in front of judges and an audience.

If you’re a fan of the competition, the awards ceremony is something you won’t want to miss.

Overall, this year’s film festival has been just as impressive as previous ones, drawing huge crowds and generating plenty of buzz. Tickets are selling fast, so be sure to grab yours before they’re gone!
