Golf Excellence Academy is the golf school that my brother sent his kid to get her training, and so far, both she and my brother have nothing but great things to say.
This school is led by David Govan, who has over 30 years of golfing experience, so to say he’s knowledgeable is an understatement.
His teaching style is also commendable. He knows how to keep his lessons digestible, which is impressive considering that golfing has several complex techniques.
He also acknowledges that everyone has their own physical strengths and weaknesses, so he makes sure that his classes are tailored to each student, instead of sticking to one curriculum.
Additionally, he tries to stop the student from learning bad habits from the very start, which many students appreciate.
Many people also like the fact that this school gives you the option of attending a class in-studio or virtually.
If you choose the studio, you’ll enjoy the perks of modern technology aiding your classes. In particular, the instructor uses slow-motion video and swing analysis software; these two applications allow you to see your form and swing clearly, allowing the instructor to give you proper, data-driven feedback.
The studio also has a weatherproof environment, which is good news because it means you can golf, rain or shine.
If you can’t make it to the studio, don’t worry, because he can host virtual lessons via the OnForm app. Even with the virtual setup, your instructor still provides detailed analysis and feedback, so it almost feels like you’re actually at the studio.
Rates here can be expensive, though, especially if you only book a single lesson (an introductory lesson costs C$85, while the next lesson is at C$120).

If you’re familiar with Dragonfly Travel, a company that specializes in planning golf vacations, then you’ll be delighted to know that they also have a golfing school: Salazar Golf Academy!
The main thing that aspiring golfers love about this school is that the instructors believe that anyone can learn how to golf, so they cater to both young and adult students of all difficulty levels.
There’s also a great variety of classes; you can have your classes with a group, or if you’re shy, you can make yours private or semi-private.
Golfing camps are also available here if you want to spend several consecutive days just playing golf and improving your skills.
Former and current students have also noted the teaching style here. The instructors here start with the fundamentals, and they try to break down these concepts in an easily understandable way.
The feedback is always constructive as well; the instructors are quick to spot any error in the student’s form and swing style, and they’ll give tips and tricks that will help with their accuracy and distance.
This school also uses cutting-edge technology to aid the instructors in providing better feedback to their students. In particular, they use TrackMan, which is a golf simulator that allows students to practice their skills inside a studio first before going out to an actual golf course.
Other tech stuff they use includes pressure plates and high-speed video analysis.
Because this school is so popular, I’ve heard that sessions can fill up quickly. So, you might struggle to book a class, especially if you prefer private coaching.
The pricing here is also on the higher end; one private class can cost you around C$175. Packages are available, and those will give you more competitive pricing, but the rates are still expensive.

I’ve asked many of Larry Cheung’s students (former and current) about their experience with this school, and their answers have one common thread: they love Larry Cheung because of his teaching style. He communicates clearly with the students and offers practical advice. If you have certain golfing goals, let Larry know, and he’ll do his best to help you achieve them all!
Larry Cheung specializes in in-person coaching. With this program, he will create a personalized curriculum for you, which is great news because it means golfers of all difficulty levels are welcome here.
You’ll meet weekly to do your lessons and practical training. While your program is still active, you can contact your instructor through text or call, and he’ll respond as soon as possible.
Even though this coach is best known for in-person coaching, he also offers online coaching, which is great news for people who can’t make it to his office in Markham.
He uses CoachNow for communication, and he’s very responsive over there. All you have to do is upload down-the-line (DTL) and face-on (FO) videos into the app, and then Larry will look at them before providing you with comprehensive feedback either in the form of a video or written text. Despite the fact that this is done online, it still feels like he’s in the same room as you!
The pricing here is pretty premium, though, so keep that in mind. Students have said that it’s worth it, but you might prefer finding classes elsewhere if you’re tight on budget.

I mostly know Modern Golf as a golf shop, so when I heard that they’re also offering classes, I was surprised and delighted.
The consensus here is that the instructors are amazing. Not only are they knowledgeable, but they’re also patient and kind. They take the time to explain all the complex concepts using clear terms so that the student can understand in no time. They’re also pretty good with the younger students, which I love to hear about because I know from experience that kids can be tough to teach.
When your session is done but you still want to practice, you’re in luck because Modern Golf actually has its own indoor golf course. This indoor golf course uses TrackMan, so the simulation is pretty accurate.
You do have to pay separately for this perk, and the only options available are multi-session packages. I do like that you can bring up to three guests per bay, so maybe you and a classmate or a friend who is also learning how to golf can come here and practice together.
While we’re on the subject of packages and pricing, it’s also worth noting that Modern Golf only has a few options for their golf classes. You can’t book a single session—you have to choose a package with at least two sessions—so you need to make sure that you’re committed to learning golf.
The rates can get expensive, but they sometimes go on sale, which is great.

Jason Helman has an impressive resume: not only does he have golf instruction experience for more than 25 years, but he’s also won many accolades, such as the PGA of Canada Professional Development and Teacher of the Year. So, it’s not a surprise that aspiring golfers seek him out in particular.
He lives up to his reputation. His approach to teaching is flexible; he doesn’t just impose his preferred way to swing onto his students. Instead, he considers their strengths and weaknesses and offers feedback and guidance based on that.
He also uses modern technology like GCQuad, which captures your movements and allows you and Jason to examine your form and swing much more closely. It’s nice that his feedback is backed by data. You can clearly see where you went wrong and how you can improve.
In-person coaching is Jason’s preference and also his most popular service, but he also offers online coaching just in case you can’t make it to the office. The online coaching can be done via FaceTime or Zoom. He will live-record the call and upload it to CoachNow so that he can properly assess your form and techniques.
That’s not all; Jason also offers golf coaching sessions during the winter and special programs for junior golfers. The variety of class options is fantastic!
However, I don’t like that he doesn’t offer one-time private classes. Jason’s classes are for people who are sure they want to learn and even pursue golf because they require commitment from the students.
Also, his main studio is located all the way in Uxbridge, which is at least an hour’s drive away from Toronto. While I understand that the GTA and its neighbouring areas don’t have much space for golf courses, this distance can still be a deal-breaker for many aspiring golfers.
