The Best Employment Lawyers in Toronto Bad Bosses Hate

employment-lawyers-toronto
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Thankfully, I’ve managed to keep my name off any HR complaints or legal disputes. A couple of my friends? Not so much.

One just wanted to clock in and earn…without realizing his rights were being steamrolled. The other got booted from her job for reasons that seemed more ‘I personally hate you’ than solid.

Good thing I grew up in a family with legal know-how. I was informed enough to know that Toronto’s best employment lawyers, who have winning records and golden reputations, can flip a case in their favour.

If you’re facing similar troubles, the names below can help you!

How much do employment lawyers charge in Toronto?

In Toronto, most employment lawyers charge between $400 and $800 per hour. The fees usually go up if the case is complicated. For certain matters, however, contingency fee arrangements, including a “no win, no fee” option might be allowed, subject to specific conditions.

How We Chose the Best Employment Lawyers in Toronto

Experience: The review is limited to employment lawyers or firms with at least 5 years of dedicated experience. We checked the Law Society of Ontario records and bios to validate.
Customer Service: Based on feedback, personal experience, and interviews, we selected lawyers or firms that are timely and polite. The ability to explain legalese in plain English was also considered.
Proven Track Record: We checked interviews, public records, portfolios, and personal experience to pick lawyers with at least 10 records of wins or favourable outcomes, particularly on cases such as wrongful dismissal and contract disputes.
Clean Ethics Record: Lawyers and firms with no history of misconduct or suspensions were favoured. To confirm, we once again used the Law Society of Ontario as a database, as well as legal forums.
Pricing: Most of our choices stay well within Toronto’s averages. We also verified the candidates’ fee structures.

The 2019-founded HTW Law has picked up plenty of honours, like landing on Manage HR’s ‘Top Employment Law Firms’ in both 2023 and 2025.

Better yet, they’re customer-centric and efficient; when my friend was unfairly fired, we rang them up and got patient, free, and detail-oriented service right away. Tony even personally sent emails and called to check on her.

The contingency fee (no-win, no-fee) arrangement was also a massive benefit. We got access to justice sans the upfront, often high costs.

HTW Law’s range is also noteworthy, with them handling 10-plus areas (for both employees and employers), such as workplace discrimination, severance pay, defamation, and even class action.

Their reach goes beyond Toronto as well. In fact, we found satisfied clients from Etobicoke, Markham, Vaughan, North York, and Richmond Hill.

The small downside is the weekend closure, but that’s a minor detail when considered alongside the power of their virtual meeting capabilities, which bridge any geographical gap, regardless of your location, whether close to or far away from Toronto.

Pros

  • Operating since 2019
  • A+ BBB rating
  • Multi-awarded
  • Customer-centric
  • No-win, no-fee setup
  • 10-plus practice areas
  • Virtual Meetings Allowed
  • Covers areas outside of Toronto

Cons

  • Weekend closure
  • Could be very busy from time to time

Knowledgeable, Professional, and His Support Team Was Very Patient

Dismissed by my boss after many years of service. Wasn’t offered severance pay and needed legal advice from an employment lawyer.

Tony Wong at HTW Law is knowledgeable, professional and his support team was very patient in taking the time to listen and understand my concerns. From my first call I felt important and being taken care of.

Being understandably stressed out, I really appreciated that Tony reviewed my case promptly, and went through the pile of documents that I submitted, and there were quite a lot, and Tony responded to my emails promptly although he must be busy. Wow!! Thank YOU Tony and the HTW Law Team!! BEST employment lawyer in town. I will be more than happy to recommend anyone who needs an employment lawyer in Toronto to contact Tony and his team at HTW Law.

His Grasp of Employment Law is Exceptional

I was looking for a Toronto employment lawyer with extensive knowledge and experience handling wrongful termination cases.

Tony Wong and his support team did not let me down, and it was a pleasure working with Tony. Mr. Wong is a person of integrity, and his grasp of employment law is exceptional. Tony took the time to get to know me personally, explained the legal concepts in easy to understand terms.

The support team at HTW Law was professional, patient, and attentive. HTW Law gave me the impression that I was well-cared for and represented.

Extremely pleased with the service and feel confident in suggesting HTW Law – Employment Lawyer to anyone in Toronto with employment law concerns. Tony might be Toronto’s best employment lawyer. Thank you very much.

No waiting for an hour either. Randy and his cordial team pick up the phone fast, providing clients with no-nonsense, non-pushy, and practical advice for free.

It’d be nice if detailed case studies were provided on their website, though.

Beyond that, they’re sound. They’ve proven why they have more than a decade in practice.

An Absolute Pleasure to Work With

Randy was an absolute pleasure to work with and having spoken to a few Lawyers to see how bets to resolve my issue, he was by far the best! What I really liked was that he is not pushy and have HONEST opinions by looking at things from my point of view rather than how to make money for himself (which is what all the others did). He also took genuine time to understand and digest my unique situation during the initial free consultation which others I found tried to rush through in 5-10mins and then ask for a retainer. I would highly recommend reaching out to Randy for a consolation if you are looking for Employment Law advice, you wont be disappointed!

I Was Satisfied with His Results and the Outcome of the Matter

Randy was referred to me when I was dealing with an employment issue…and I was satisfied with his results and the outcome of the matter.

Randy’s (and his team’s) experience, diligence and support are valuable in his consultation with the client to understand the situation, the client’s needs and advises accordingly setting the expectation and timelines.

Randy addresses concerns promptly to ensure the client understands and Randy recommends solutions that are reasonable to achieve the best results possible for the client.

This experience endorsed my choosing of Randy and his team – that they were the right choice in achieving what is best for the client.

They went above and beyond when they didn’t have to, and that kind of support means a lot especially when you’re feeling stuck. Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Thu – 8:30 am to 5 pm
  • Fri – 8 am to 4:30 pm

Whitten & Lublin caught our attention with their experience. Specifically, they handled 12,000-plus cases and over 29,000 consultations.

From what we’ve gathered, their team, which has more than 180 years of combined experience, consists of master negotiators. Lots of interviewees mentioned getting favourable results, especially in severance cases.

Clients also described the firm’s approach as results-driven yet empathetic. They’re well-versed in calming anxious clients while still gathering the details that matter.

Furthermore, they have convenient virtual tools, like a virtual lawyer and a severance calculator. Neither are alternatives for actual lawyers, but both are quite useful if you need quick insights or estimates.

On the downside, Whitten and Lublin’s office is closed on weekends. The firm’s consultations also generally come with a fixed price, unlike most firms.

The silver lining is that their consults aren’t rushed. It usually runs for an hour and thirty minutes.

Pros

  • Has handled 12,000-plus cases
  • Has provided 29,000 consultations
  • Has solved disputes without going to court
  • Offers virtual tools
  • 180 years of combined experience
  • Serves areas outside of Toronto
  • Covers 10-plus areas

Cons

  • Consults aren’t free
  • Closed on weekends

Exceptional Service

I had a chance to work with Daniel & Rachel from Whitten & Lublin. From the first meeting to dealing with the case, they’ve been on top of their game. They are professional, great communicators, detail-oriented and committed to delivering their best. I strongly recommend this firm. I am especially pleased with Rachel Patten who has gone above and beyond to provide exceptional service. She’s insightful & strategic as a lawyer and I am happy to recommend her to anyone seeking legal counsel.

Very Helpful

I was recently terminated from my employment as an Executive without cause. A family member referred me to David Whitten. From the onset, David understood my situation & quickly took charge. He was very supportive and confident, providing excellent guidance and consistent updates every step of the way. David successfully negotiated a great settlement on my behalf. I definitely received the best outcome as a result of David’s knowledge, experience & professionalism. His assistant Norma was also very helpful. I would highly recommend David and his team at WHITTEN & LUBLIN.

Samfiru Tumarkin

samfiru-tumarkin

Address: 350 Bay St.

Contact Details: +1 416-861-9065

Operating Hours: Mon to Fri – 9 am to 5 pm

Website

Samfiru Tumarkin has been operating since 2007, making it the longest-running firm on this list, with a portfolio consisting of over 50,000 clients.

They’re not that hard on the wallet either. Most consultations cost nada, and they stick to a ‘no-win, no-fee’ policy.

A couple of notable recognitions also round out their track record. For instance, the Globe and Mail recognized Samfiru Tumarkin as one of Canada’s best firms in 2024.

Being closed on weekends is a hiccup, though, especially if you need immediate help or prefer face-to-face consultations. Their online chat service can also be sluggish, though, to be fair, the replies don’t usually take an hour.

Other than that, they’re not a bad pick, especially for severance matters. It’s where they’ve had most success, as per the clients we contacted.

The online tools, TV programmes, and radio shows on employment law are handy as well.

Pros

  • Founded in 2007 (the oldest firm here)
  • Has served 50,000-plus clients
  • Named one of Canada’s best firms in 2004 by The Globe and Mail
  • Covers 10-plus areas
  • No-win, no-fee setup
  • Free consultations
  • Has TV/radio programmes and online tools

Cons

  • Online chat service isn’t the fastest
  • Weekend closure

His Advice Was Very Valuable

A friend has recommended Samfiru Tumarkin law firm to me, and now I can’t thank him enough. Consulting with Lior Samfiru, I realised that my severance pay was significantly less than what I was entitled to. Lior was able to recover most of what I deserved. His advice was very valuable. He guided me throughout the process with incredible knowledge, patience and clarity which made the process easier and stress-free for me. Lior Samfiru and Krystal Garry demonstrated a high level of professionalism and the service I have received was far above my expectation. The outcome was much better than I had anticipated. The improved severance package has provided me with critical pressure relief while I was looking for a job under a short timeline and allowed me to make better decisions on the way forward. I am so glad I chose Samfiru Tumarkin LLP and highly recommend asking their legal advice before signing the severance agreement.

Achieved a Very Positive Result

My experience with Samfiru Tumarkin was completely satisfactory. Jeremy Herman (along with the very capable Kirsten Anderson) took excellent care of my needs throughout the entire process and achieved a very positive result in the end. Very responsive to my questions with clear explanations to take me through a process unfamiliar to me. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Thank you Jeremy and Kirsten.

Monkhouse Law Employment Lawyers

monkhouse-law-employment-lawyers

Address: Toronto Dominion Centre, 220 Bay St., Suite 900

Contact Details: +1 647-370-6274

Operating Hours: Mon to Fri – 9 am to 5 pm

Website

Established in 2013, Monkhouse Law Employment Lawyers is all about employee representation. That’s reflected in the 15 areas where they operate, which include wrongful dismissals, contract disputes, severance settlements, and more.

However, that means that they’re not suitable for employers. Moreover, their team is relatively smaller, with 13 legal minds on board; most firms have nearly 20.

If that’s not an issue, there are plenty of reasons why they’re worth considering. Clients have reported that Monkhouse’s free, 30-minute consultations are thorough and compassionate.

The team has also picked up their fair share of recognition. For instance, they made Globe and Mail’s Top Growing Law Firms in 2019 and earned gold from the Toronto Star in that same year.

No need to dig around or ask around like we did either. Their case history is posted online for your reference, and if you need some fast but reliable estimates, the firm has two online tools available: a severance pay calculator and a disability pay calculator.

Pros

  • Operating since 2013
  • Offers services in 15 areas
  • Named one of the Globe and Mail’s Top Growing Law Firms in 2019
  • Received a gold award from the Toronto Star in 2019
  • Free, 30-minute consultations
  • Case history available online
  • Offers virtual tools

Cons

  • Focuses on employees solely
  • Weekend closure
  • Relatively smaller firm

Made a Difficult Situation Far More Manageable

I had the pleasure of working with Emily Kim, Associate Lawyer at Monkhouse Law, and I cannot speak highly enough of her professionalism, expertise, and dedication. Emily guided me through a complex employment matter with clarity and compassion, ensuring I understood every step of the process. Her attention to detail, timely communication, and strategic approach made a difficult situation far more manageable. I truly appreciated her ability to advocate effectively while also being empathetic and approachable. I highly recommend Emily Kim and the team at Monkhouse Law to anyone seeking reliable, knowledgeable, and results-driven legal support in employment law. Thank you for your outstanding service!

I Wouldn’t Hesitate to Recommend Monkhouse Law

Needing legal support isn’t something most people look forward to. I was initially ambivalent about seeking advice, even though a trusted former colleague (an HR Director) recommended Monkhouse Law to me. I worried I might be pressured into pursuing services I wasn’t sure I needed, but what I really wanted was peace of mind. I booked the free 30-minute consultation and was connected with Marissa Hum. She immediately put me at ease, walking me through baseline questions and then asking thoughtful follow-ups tailored to my situation. The experience was more thorough and reassuring than I expected. By the end of the call, I felt confident in the decision I was about to make regarding my package. More importantly, I recognized how valuable it is to have legal counsel that takes the time to listen and explain without pressure or jargon. This consultation wasn’t just helpful, it was empowering. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Monkhouse Law, and Marissa specifically, for anyone navigating workplace issues or employment transitions
