It’s always a great thing when pop culture is used to teach the new generation about Canada’s rich history.
Lego hobbyist Andrew Delbaere and Fort Langley Métis businessman Darian Kovacs certainly agree, as they’ve collaborated to create Lego minifigures of Indigenous leaders Louis Riel and Amelia Douglas.
These two figures played a significant role in the development of our country. Louis Riel himself is a highly regarded Métis leader and considered the founder of Manitoba.
Meanwhile, Amelia Douglas is a renowned Métis matriarch known for her contributions as a nurse and midwife to several fur trading posts along British Columbia.
A total of 100 Lego sets were created by Delbaere and Kovacs. These sets were proudly shown during Fort Langley’s Louis Riel Day celebrations on November 23, 2024.
Most of these sets were given away to help more people learn about these historical figures. However, for those of us who haven’t yet seen the Lego figurines in person, the remaining Lego sets are still on display in the Fort Langley National Historic Site.
Due to the massive success of this event, Delbaere is already planning to produce more Lego figures of prominent Canadian people in the near future.
